High schools: Bernard leads Schenectady baseball to win

David Bernard went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs batted in, and a six-run fourth inning helped Schenectady claim a 10-9 victory over La Salle Institute in non-league baseball action Sunday.

Alex Peters went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Schenectady, which picked up its first win of the season. Eddie Yamin singled twice and drove in a run for La Salle.

In the Colonie Cup, CBA, Shaker and Colonie all went 1-1, with CBA taking the cup on run differential. Colonie posted a 6-5 win over Shaker in the day’s first game, then CBA beat Colonie 11-2 behind two home runs and four RBIs from Luke Szepek. The day’s final game was a wild slugfest, with Shaker winning 20-16 led by three home runs and six RBIs from Joe Karpierz, while CBA’s Ryan Bilka had a mammoth game at the plate going 5 for 5 with four homers and nine RBIs.

Miranda King belted her first varsity home run, a three-run shot in the fifth inning, and Allie Silliman, Taylor O’Brien and Sarah Bayly each had two hits and two RBIs in Columbia’s 13-7 Suburban Council softball win over Saratoga Springs. In the loss, Lindsey Bell had a pair of hits for Saratoga Springs.
