FONDA — Mike Mahaney picked up his fourth career Fonda Speedway victory Saturday evening, but his first on a regular Saturday evening racing program.
Mahaney’s previous three wins were all at special events — the season-opening Ice Jam in 2012, and special Jack Johnson tribute races in both 2012 and 2017.
Racing as a Fonda Speedway regular this year, Mahaney took home the checkered flag in the 30-lap, $2,400-to-win Sunoco Modified feature after taking the lead away from JaMike Sowle on lap 19.
“It is so cool to be back here in Fonda’s victory lane,” Mahaney said after his win. “It has been harder for me to win a regular show here than other times that we have been here, and I have been able to win.”
Other winners on Saturday were Chad Edwards (Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman), Luke Horning (Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks), Jeremy Tyrrell (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), and Ken Hollenback (SOHC) and Slappy White (DOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinders.
Sowle started on the outside pole in the Sunoco Modified feature and held the early lead, with Mahaney moving quickly into the top five after starting 11th. By the race’s halfway point, Mahaney was up to second behind Sowle with George Foley, Michael Maresca and Josh Hohenforst in the top five.
With Sowle running the outside groove, Mahaney stayed low and quickly caught the leader. When Sowle slipped out of the groove in turn four on lap 19, Mahaney got under him to take the lead and stayed in front for the remaining laps. Sowle held on for second ahead of Maresca, Ronnie Johnson and Foley.
“We have been struggling here at Fonda and working hard to try to adapt to the track,” Mahaney said in victory lanee. “I have a great group of guys on my crew and great sponsors that are behind me and I think we finally got it.”
In the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman feature, Edwards took the lead on a lap three restart and stayed in front despite six cautions in the 25-lap event. Several drivers made their way close to the front after starting well back in the field, including 21st-place starter Payton Talbot, 22nd-place starter Brian Calabrese and 27-thplace starter Addison Bowman.
Calabrese eventually moved up to second on lap 14, but was no match for Edwards, who claimed his third win of 2021. Calabrese, Nick Scavia, Tim Hartman Jr. and Talbot rounded out the top five.
The Algonkin Pro Stock feature saw six lead changes, with Horning and Nick Stone engaged in a constant game of cat-and-mouse at the front of the pack after Horning took the lead from Jason Morrison on a lap five restart.
Horning and Stone were side-by-side for the lead on the final lap, with Horning winning by a nose — just 0.043 seconds — at the finish line. Horning’s win was his first of 2021 and 22nd of his career in Fonda’s pro stock division. Stone, Kenny Gates, Josh Coonradt and Morrison completed the top five.
Tyrrell led every lap of the Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman 15-lap event for his second win of the season, followed by Carter Gibbons, Stephen Gray, Jonathan Feagles and Kyle Dingman.
Ken Hollenback continued his winning ways in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division as he was the overall winner of the 12-lap feature event in the SOHC class, while Slappy White finished second overall for the win in the DOHC class. Brandon Tyler, Kerrie Hollenback, and Tyler White completed the top five overall.
