High schools: Shenendehowa softball beats Ballston Spa in game of dueling grand slams

Ballston Spa’s Ana Gold and Shenendehowa’s Becca Zawistowski each hit a grand slam in Tuesday’s Suburban Council softball matchup, which the Plainsmen won 10-6.

The Plainsmen scored seven runs in the second inning on their way to building a 10-0 lead before Ballston Spa scored all its runs in the fifth.

Besides Zawistowski, Heather Junjulas and Jada Lambright each also hit a home run for Shenendehowa, which received three RBIs from Ellen Fuda.

In a Western Athletic Conference matchup, Fonda-Fultonville won 2-0 against Duanesburg. Maddy Mott struck out 13 batters in the shutout. Kamryn Walton and Marilyn Whitcavitch each had an RBIs. For Duanesburg, Maddie Kenney struck out nine batters.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo secured an 8-6 win against Canajoharie. In defeat, Caitlyn Baker had three hits, including a two-RBI triple, and Kirsten Hyney had two hits and an RBI.

In a non-league game, Moira Collins struck out 14 batters to lead Tamarac to a 3-1 win against Shaker. Gianna Bucciero had two RBIs in the win, while Shaker’s Izabelle Ratcliffe had a triple and an RBI.

Amsterdam won 10-1 on its senior day against Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons. Sydney Szczepanik, a senior, led Amsterdam with an all-around effort. Szczepanik struck out 11 batters in the complete-game effort, and finished 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Sam Lee had three RBIs in the victory, while Shelby LaMont had two. For ND-BG, Taylor Van Auken had two hits.

Johnstown scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning in its 8-7 win against Mayfield. Marissa Wille had a double and two RBIs in defeat, while Kelsey Meca had a double and a single. 

ALBANY ACADEMY BASEBALL’S GAY THROWS NO-HITTER

Albany Academy’s Alex Gay struck out four and walked one in pitching a no-hitter against Broadalbin-Perth. In the 3-0 non-league win, Albany Academy’s Teige Kimbler had three hits. 

In a 6-1 win against Maple Hill, Hoosick Falls’ Alex Bushee pitched five relief innings without allowing an earned run, while Jake Sparks had two doubles. 

BEHRMAN DAZZLES IN NISKAYUNA BOYS’ LACROSSE WIN

In an 18-10 Suburban Council win against Shenendehowa, Niskayuna’s Brock Behrman registered nine goals and three assists. Greyson Vorgang added five goals and two assists, while Lucas Klokiw had three goals and an assist, and Leo O’Brien added two goals for Niskayuna. Shenendehowa’s Kyle Acker and Colin Bullock each had three goals and an assist.

Kevin Gutknecht led the way with six goals and an assist as Guilderland powered to a 24-7 win over Averill Park. Guilderland scored 12 goals in the first quarter and led 20-5 at halftime.

Huck Patton had five goals and an assist in Saratoga Springs’ 14-9 win against Columbia.

In a Foothills Council game, Carson Griffin had four goals and two assists, and Zach Bowen had three goals and two assists in Schuylerville’s 15-1 win over Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth. In the loss, Andy Welch scored and Nate Bohm had an assist.

Connor White registered eight goals and four assists in Queensbury’s 22-0 win against Scotia-Glenville.

Maple Hill/Ichabod Crane won 4-3 against Schenectady/Mohonasen in a Colonial Council matchup. Kyle Shendler scored all three goals for Schenectady/Mohonasen.

DEAN, FRASIER LEAD SARATOGA SPRINGS’ GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Saratoga Springs won 16-4 against Columbia in Suburban Council girls’ lacrosse. Aubrey Dean had four goals and an assist in the win, while Molly Frasier also contributed five points with two goals and three assists.

Averill Park won 13-9 against Guilderland despite five goals from Lauren Thompson. Scoring three goals apiece for Averill Park were Julia Foster and Mia Tessitore, while Julia Gelder had two goals and two assists.

Lauren Shanahan led Shenendehowa with six goals in its 14-4 win against Niskayuna.

Shaker won 12-4 against Albany Academy in a non-league game. Lauren McCulloch had five goals in the win, while Bryn Fecko contributed four assists, Natalie Bennett had three goals and Jenna Pollicino registered three assists.
