REXFORD — Work is underway on another new Stewart’s convenience store, one of 14 that the Malta-based chain expects to build or renovate in 2021.

Construction started Monday of a larger shop to replace the existing store at the corner of Riverview and Balltown roads. Stewart’s Shops bought an acre of land from The Edison Club next door to accommodate the project, which is expected to be completed mid-summer.

The new store is scheduled to open July 19 and the new gas pumps will be ready a few weeks later, in late August. It will be about 3,500 square feet, the same size as most other locations being built from the ground up in the current phase.

Stewart’s Shops also is undertaking a significant expansion of the cold storage space at its production facility, and expects that to be completed later this year.

All totaled, the construction budget is roughly $50 million for 2021.
