ALBANY — The Albany City Rocks face a 1-2 punch on Saturday.
As in, the consensus top two picks in the 2022 men’s basketball recruiting class.
Emoni Bates of Ypsi Prep Academy, a 6-foot-9, 185-pound small forward, and 6-10, 230-pound center Jalen Duren of Montverde (Fla.) Academy will team on Team Final for the GymRat Challenge at the Washington Avenue Armory.
They are considered the top two recruits in the class and will be GymRat teammates on Team Final, the City Rocks’ opponent at 2:20 p.m.
The tournament will feature seven Nike EYBL powerhouses and another top AAU team, including BABC, Expressions Elite, NY Gauchos, NJ Legacy, PSA Cardinals and NY RENS, besides the City Rocks and Team Final.
Bates recently decommitted to Michigan State, putting the likes of Tennessee, Memphis and Texas back on the re-recruitment trail.
It is expected that he’ll go straight to pro ball, though.
Duren, who is being heavily recruited by Juwan Howard at Michigan, has moved ahead of Bates to No. 1 on the Rivals.com for prospects in the current high school senior class.
The GymRat Challenge has been approved for 100% capacity at the 2,500-seat Armory.
Tickets, priced at $35, will be available only at the door, and spectators must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
