High school playoffs roundup: Scotia softball moves on with 12-5 win over Hudson Falls

Scotia-Glenville broke open a close game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and six in the fifth to defeat Hudson Falls 12-5 in the Section II Class A softball tournament on Monday.

Hannah Piraino drove in four runs on two singles for the Tartans, Brenna Jahn had a triple and single for three RBIs, Jordan Iannotti had two singles and two RBIs and Gina Cassaro went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

Scotia will play at Queensbury on Tuesday.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake rolled past Lansingburgh 13-1.

Olivia DeCitise struck out 12 and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as Troy downed Glens Falls 8-2.

Maryssa Sano had a home run and a single for Troy, which will play at South Glens Falls on Tuesday.

In Class AA, Albany outscored Niskayuna 3-2 in the eighth innning to hold on for a 4-3 victory.

Colonie’s Carly Gemmett struck out 10 and shut out Shaker 4-0.

Abby Sacks hit a home run for the Garnet Raiders, and Taylor Quinn, Lexi Koonz and Sophia Cussao each hit a double.

Cohoes defeated Broadalbin-Perth 11-5 in Class B, as Hannah Burgess went 3-for-3 with a double and Shelby Dawe threw a four-hitter for the Tigers.
Kiaira Tomlinson had a double, single and two RBIs for Broadalbin-Perth.

In Class C, Galway’s Amber Kolpakas prevailed in a pitchers duel with Hoosick Falls’ Kennedy Boisvert, striking out 18 and giving up just four hits in 11 innings as the Eagles won 6-1.

Boisvert struck out 21 and gave up just seven hits in 11 innings.

The score was tied 0-0 through nine innings before each team scored one in the 10th. Galway scored five runs in the top of the 11th.

Eliza Fagan and Izzy Mancini each had two singles and an RBI and scored a run for Galway, Kolpakas had a triple and two RBIs and Trishelle Oliver had a double and an RBI.

Voorheesville scored three runs early and held on for a 3-1 win over Middleburgh.

Rowan Knauf had two singles and one RBI for the Blackbirds, and Amanda Danz hit an RBI double.

Hoosic Valley got past Canajoharie 3-1.

Taysha Hohensheldt had an RBI double for Canajoharie, Kirsten Hyney had a double and a single and Jenna Trembley struck out 14.

Maple Hill defeated Waterford-Halfmoon 14-2, as Kate Brodzinski and Emma Dugan each had a double and a single for Maple Hill.

Holy Names piled up 18 hits in six innings and defeated Duanesburg 16-9.

Olivia Caporale had two home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs for Holy Names.

BASEBALL

Cobleskill-Richmondville answered two quick Watervliet runs with four of its own, and went on to post a 17-5 Class B play-in win as part of the Section II baseball tournament Monday.

Dylan Becker had three hits and three RBIs for the Bulldogs, Zowen Collins had a double, single and three RBIs, Colton Sisson had two doubles and two RBI, and Derek Hotzler had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Sisson and Hotzler both scored four runs. The Bulldogs, seeded No. 16, play at No. 1 Hudson Tuesday.

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk edged Coxsackie-Athens 7-6 on Louis Newburg’s RBI double in the 10th inning. Jason Reif had a double, single and three RBIs for Ravena.

CLASS C

With a 13-3 play-in round victory stopped in the fifth inning, Duanesburg advanced past Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons. Shane Wetherington had two RBIs in the victory, plus struck out five batters in three innings.

Jake Sparks struck out eight in six innings to improve to 6-1, and added a double, single and two RBIs in Hoosick Falls’ 8-1 win over Voorheesville. Josh Colegrove had three singles and an RBI for Hoosick Falls, and Tucker Thayke had a double and two RBIs. Voorheesville managed four hits including Mason Wight’s RBI single in the first.

Jake Houle and Werkie Hayes had three hits apiece, Jaycen Janusz knocked in four runs, and Waterford-Halfmoon put together a pair of 10-run innings in a 21-4, mercy rule-shortened win over Middleburgh. Nine different Fordians scored at least two runs, and Janusz, Blake Cribbs and Harrison Chapin each had two hits.

Ethan Drinon drove in four runs with a double and two triples, and Quinn Barton homered and singled to lift Schoharie past Corinth 11-1. Schoharie put the game away with a seven-run fifth.

REGULAR SEASON

Six Shenendehowa pitchers joined on a one-hitter, Colin Maloney had two doubles and an RBI, and Luke Lavery had a double and two RBI in a 6-0 Suburban Council win over Ballston Spa. Brody Keneston broke up Shenendehowa’s no-hit bid with a seventh-inning single.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Niskayuna girls’ lacrosse team cruised to a 27-3 victory Monday against Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth in the first round of the Section II Class B tournament.

Hannah Collins had seven goals and two assists in the victory, while Ashlyn McPartlon registered four goals and three assists. Sophia Boler contributed two goals and three assists, while each of Mary Kate Cestaro and Ella Nish had three goals and an assist. Maria Tsakalakos also scored three goals, and Faith Foley added two goals and two assists.

Julia Dion scored two goals for Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth.

Niskayuna, the No. 3 seed, will play No. 2 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in a semifinal on Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Columbia will play top-seeded Queensbury in Thursday’s other Class B semifinal. On Monday, Columbia defeated Albany Academy 18-5.

Gabby Rivera had eight goals and an assist in the win, and Elle Stringer contributed two goals and five assists. Tristyn Valenze added four goals.

In the Class A tournament, fourth-seeded Shaker advanced with a 15-6 win against fifth-seeded Guilderland. Lauren McCulloch contributed four goals and an assist, and Jenna Pollicino had a goal and four assists in the victory. Shaker will play No. 1 Bethlehem in a Thursday semifinal.

Also advancing Monday was Saratoga Springs with a 22-9 win against Colonie. The third-seeded Blue Streaks led 10-8 at halftime.

Carly Wise scored seven goals in the victory, Lucy Daly had a goal and six assists, Morgan Brooking added five goals and an assist, and Izzy Burke had two goals and three assists. Shannon Coyle had four goals for Colonie.

Saratoga Springs will play No. 2 Shenendehowa, which won 23-0 against Albany, in a Thursday semifinal.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Donovan Cataldo, Jack Mongan and Jack Shea won singles matches, and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake swept the doubles in beating Scotia-Glenville 5-2 in a Section II Class A boys’ tennis semifinal.

Wyatt deLalla and Ben Rodriguez, and Liam Sullivan and Declan Nerney, were doubles winners. Burnt Hills will meet Queensbury, which defeated Averill Park, in Tuesday’s 4 p.m. championship match at Central Park in Schenectady. Ryan and Jake McKone won singles matches for Scotia-Glenville.

Saratoga stretched its record to 15-0 with a 6-3 Class AA semifinal win over Albany Academy. Saratoga meets Bethlehem, which eliminated Shaker, in Tuesday’s 4 p.m. title match at Central Park. Nicholas Grosso, Vincent DeVito and Liam Chartrand won singles matches for the Blue Streaks, who went 3-0 in the doubles.

Others winners Monday included Ichabod Crane (over Schalmont) and Greenville (over Glens Falls) in the Class B semifinals, and Maple Hill (over Lake George) and Hadley-Luzerne (over North Warren) in the Class C/D semifinals.
