School softball: Five-run first sparks Amsterdam to 8-4 win

The Amsterdam softball team opened Tuesday’s Class A quarterfinal with five runs in the top of the first inning on its way to an 8-4 win against Mohonasen.

Fifth-seeded Amsterdam received a home run and three RBIs from Shelby LaMont, while Sydney Szczepanik joined LaMont in registering two hits. Szczepanik also scored three runs, and picked up the pitching victory with two strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

For Mohonasen, Mattison Muller had two RBIs and Amanda O’Connor collected three hits.

Amsterdam will play the winner of Burnt Hills and Averill Park, which was postponed to Wednesday. Averill Park is the tournament’s top seed.

GOLD, LYON LIFT BALLSTON SPA

Ana Gold and Maggie Lyon each hit a home run during Ballston Spa’s 9-1 win against Saratoga Springs in the Class AA quarterfinals. Gold had four RBIs in the contest, which saw Lyon strike out three batters in five innings pitched without allowing an earned run. Also for third-seeded Ballston Spa,

Paige Witalec had four hits and three RBIs, and Halle Wright contributed three hits. For Saratoga Springs, Karley Austin had two hits.

Top-seeded Shenendehowa won 10-0 against Albany. McKenna Barry and Kelsey Higgins each hit a home run for the Plainsmen, and Mariana Abate struck out 15 batters in pitching a one-hit shutout. Becca Zawistowski had a game-high three RBIs.

Ballston Spa will play the winner of Bethlehem and Colonie, while Shenendehowa will play the winner of Columbia and Guilderland in the semifinals.

The matchups between Bethlehem and Colonie, and Columbia and Guilderland were postponed to Wednesday.

O’REILLY STARS FOR SARATOGA CATHOLIC

In a Class C first-round game, Molly O’Reilly pitched a complete game and hit a home run in Saratoga Catholic’s 4-2 win against Voorheesville. O’Reilly struck out a dozen batters in the victory for fifth-seeded Saratoga Catholic.
