Ryan Ash opened the game’s scoring with a solo home run, then added the Section II Class AA quarterfinal’s final run with a memorable dash to home plate.

Those two plays helped tenth-seeded Saratoga Springs upset second-seeded Shenendehowa 4-2 in a postseason matchup between the rivals that took eight innings to decide a winner.

Saratoga Springs won 1-0 against Niskayuna in its first-round game. The Blue Streaks will play No. 6 Shaker in Saturday’s semifinals.

“We feel great. We have a lot of confidence right now,” Ash said. “We’re a group of guys that are really starting to come together here at the end of the road.”

After Ash hit a home run in the first inning, Shenendehowa’s Cal Vander Veer slugged a two-run home run in the third inning. The Blue Streaks answered in the fourth inning when Alexander Teator scored on a wild pitch.

The game stayed tied at 2-2 through seven inning. In the top of the eighth, Teator collected an RBI single, then Ash added an insurance run with one out. With Charles DeRizzo batting, Ash raced from third base to home plate as the pitch was delivered; with the ball heading toward the dirt around home plate, DeRizzo pulled back his bunt attempt, but Ash read the play and kept motoring toward home plate.

“He pulled back and I just kept going. We got a little bit lucky at the end there,” Ash said. “I was just thinking about running as fast as I could and diving for home plate.”

Nathan Rodriguez earned the win for Saratoga Springs, striking out eight batters in 3 2-3 innings of scoreless relief pitching.

Brody Vincenzi had three hits for the Plainsmen.

SAUSVILLE WITH NO-HITTER

Tyler Sausville of Colonie pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts, and Tyler Figeroa hit two home runs as the fourth-seeded Garnet Raiders beat fifth-seeded Columbia 8-0. Cam Arey also homered for Colonie.
Trey Mariano went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBIs to lift sixth-seeded Shaker over third-seeded Ballston Spa 10-6.

Troy defeated Albany Academy 6-0 in the Class A baseball quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded Troy received 13 strikeouts in six scoreless innings from Mike Kennedy. Troy will play in the semifinals against top-seeded South Glens Falls, which defeated Averill Park 3-0.

Burnt Hills scored seven runs in the fifth inning of its 12-3 win against Queensbury. Vincent Vendetti and Kyle Kristel each had three RBIs in the win. Burnt Hills’ Kyle DeCresce struck out eight in a complete-game win; DeCresce’s three runs allowed were all unearned. Third-seeded Burnt Hills will play second-seeded La Salle in the semifinals.

Nick Delucia had two hits, and Andrew Schraa had three RBI for sixth-seeded Schalmont in a 6-2 Class B win over Schuylerville. Ashton Morolis had two hits for the Black Horses.

Moira Collins had 10 strikeouts for Tamarac in a 13-1 Class B quarterfinal win over Catholic Central. Collins went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in the win. Lake George’s Madeline Gorey had seven strikeouts in a four-hit shutout of Greenwich in the Section II Class C quarterfinal. Tyler Bergman had two hits and three RBI for the Warriors.

A two-run fifth inning gave Warrensburg the go-ahead lead and pitcher Kara Bacon had eight strikeouts in the 4-2 win over Saratoga Central Catholic. The Saints’ Molly O’Reilly recorded seven strikeouts on the day.

Emily Mesick threw a two-hit shutout including seven strikeouts as Chatham dropped Berne-Knox-Westerlo, 12-0.
Adryanna Jennings had four RBI in the afternoon contest with Haley Pulver and Abby Taylor adding three each.

A three-run rally by Argyle in their final at-bats wasn’t enough to overcome Salem’s lead as the Generals captured the Section II Class D softball title 7-3.

Salem pitcher Sarah McCauliffe recorded six strikeouts in the championship game. Gretta Schneider led the Scots with four hits in the game.
