The Red Cross is helping seven adults and an 8-month-old child in Schenectady after a 2-alarm fire broke out on Crane Street in Mont Pleasant early Saturday morning.

Schenectady City firefighters responded around 5:30 a.m. to 1159 Crane Street where they extinguished a fire that was concentrated on the first floor of a multi-family home within 30 minutes.

“The cause is still under investigation, but does not appear to be malicious,” said Assistant Chief Don Moreno.

He said the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.

The Red Cross is providing financial assistance that can be used for shelter, food and clothing, according to a release from the organization.

“Volunteers also offered health services and emotional support,” states the press release. “In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.”
