High schools: CBA wins Section II Class AA baseball title


Christian Brothers Academy plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and CJ Kuentzel struck out 11 in five innings on the mound to lead the Brothers to a 7-4 win over Shaker on Tuesday to capture the Section II Class AA baseball championship.

Ryan Bilka went 3 for 4 and drove in a run for top-seeded CBA, while Will Baumann drove in two runs. Luke Szepek and Jackson Lilley eachch had a pair of hits and a run batted in for CBA.

Joe Karpierz homered, doubled, singled and drove in two runs for Shaker, which rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh with nobody out before Bilka came on in relief and shut the door with a pickoff, a flyout and a strikeout to end the game.

Germantown only got two hits in the Section II Class D baseball championship game against Fort Ann, but plated runs on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning to capture a 2-1 win.

Three of Tuesday’s scheduled Section II championship games were postponed due to rain and will be made up Wednesday.

The Class C baseball final between Canajoharie and Lake George will be played Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. in Canajoharie, while the Class B and C softball championship games will both be played at 4 p.m. Tamarac visits Ichabod Crane in the Class B final and Lake George plays at Chatham for the Class C crown.
