SCHENECTADY — Saratoga Springs senior Nick Grosso defeated Albany Academy’s Will O’Brien 6-2, 6-0 to win the Section II boys’ tennis singles title Tuesday at Central Park.
No. 1 Grosso defeated No. 3 Ashrith Rao from Bethlehem 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals before taking on O’Brien in the final. O’Brien defeated No. 4 Masami Surisawa from Albany 6-1, 6-2 to advance.
“He told me that he was starting to get into a groove, he started loosening up a little bit at the end of the first match,” Saratoga Springs coach Tim O’Brien said. “He came out in the finals, they were exchanging huge ground strokes, big serves early on in the match. I was just so impressed with his play, with the way he carried himself. I’m so proud of him. It’s the first time we’ve had a [Section II] singles champion in the history of Saratoga tennis.”
Albany Academy doubles team of Dhev Jammula and Zain Magdon defeated Shenendehowa’s pairing of Wesley Poe and Rupin Pradeep 6-2, 6-1 to win the Section II doubles title.
No. 1 Jammula and Magdon defeated No. 3 Graham Hardiman and Hayden Brown from Bethlehem 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals with No. 2 Shenendehowa double Poe and Pradeep defeating the No. 4 Saratoga Springs team of Andrew Blaha and Vincent Devito 6-3, 62.
Hadley-Luzerne captured the Section II Class C/D championship with a 4-3 win against Maple Hill.
