Police: Niskayuna High student teacher charged with third-degree rape; Victim a student at the time

NISKAYUNA – A student teacher at Niskayuna High School is facing third-degree rape and other charges related to a student at the school, police said Wednesday.

Nikos Assimakopoulos, 23, of Albany, was arrested on the felony rape count, along with third-degree criminal sex act, a felony, and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.

Police made the  arrest after a lengthy investigation begun when a female victim reported that in  late 2019, she engaged in a sexual relationship with Assimakopoulos. At the time, she was under the legal age of consent and a student at the school, police said.

Police asked that anyone who may be aware of any other inappropriate and possibly illegal relationships involving Assimakopoulos to contact Niskayuna Police Detective Paul Daly at 518-386-4582.

Assimakopoulos was arraigned and ordered held on $7,500 bail. He is due back in court later.
