Hailey Skyler Becker

Honor Student

PARENTS: Timothy and Jessica Becker

COLLEGE OR OTHER PLANS: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to study biomedical engineering on the pre-med track.

AFTER COLLEGE: I plan to travel to countries in need of medical help and develop new medical technologies to improve the health of the community.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF THE LAST YEAR OF SCHOOL, and THE MOST REWARDING: To graduate in the middle of a pandemic is most definitely not the ideal situation, whether it be student’s learning remotely or feeling isolated from the rest of our peers. There were multiple times throughout the year that we felt a lot of loss of our senior high school experience and not being able to physically have each other. … The pandemic will leave scars on all of our minds and in the textbooks for centuries. It’s not easy only seeing your friends through a computer screen, not having our fellow classmates there to cheer us on, causing us to learn how to be there for one another in any other way we can and building a solid foundation of resilience in the name of the Class of 2021.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF DURING THE PANDEMIC/HOW HAVE YOU CHANGED: That we need one another more than we ever knew. We were very fortunate to allow all of the seniors to come back full-time in person for the last quarter of the year — it may be a short amount of time but it is worth it in a million and one ways.

WHAT IS THE MEMORY OF SCHOOL YOU WILL NEVER FORGET/WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL: The day all the seniors were able to come back full-time in person. This was a turning point that changed the senior class’ outlook on our experience during the pandemic. To see all of my friend’s smiling faces that I hadn’t seen in almost a year was emotional and exciting.

WHAT’S IN YOUR MUSIC PLAYER: I appreciate all types of music from Green Day to Lady Gaga to Pitbull.

BEST PART ABOUT GRADUATING: That we will all be able to do it together. We feared that we would have to split graduation up into two groups depending on COVID regulations. We all struggled through this time together and we deserve to graduate as a class.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU: My calculus teacher, Mrs. Countryman, who helped me build a solid foundation of confidence.
