FONDA — The race to the win in the Sunoco Modified feature on Saturday night at Fonda Speedway became a family affair between Jessica and Stewart Friesen, with Jessica Friesen beating her husband to the finish line for her first-ever modified feature win at the “Track of Champions.”

Jessica Friesen captured her first win in a modified car earlier this year at Utica-Rome Speedway, and previously had two wins in a 360 Sprint car at Fonda.

Also scoring a big win Saturday was Luke Horning in the 16th annual Hondo Classic in the Algonkin Motel Pro Stock division. Other winners were Brian Calabrese (Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman), Clayton DuMond (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), and Ken Hollenback (SOHC) and Slappy White (DOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinders.

Jessica Friesen started the 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature on the front row and was in front for almost every moment of the race. Husband Stewart Friesen briefly took the lead on a lap 13 restart, but Jessica had the lead back by the time the lap was completed. The spouses contested the lead tightly over the final half of the race, but it was Jessica Friesen taking the checkered flag ahead of her husband. Rocky Warner, David Schilling and Adam McAuliffe rounded out the top five.

In the Hondo Classic, Horning took the lead on lap 12 and went on to win over Nick Stone, Josh Coonradt, Kenny Gates and Ivan Joslin, though Coonradt was disqualified in post-race inspection when he came up too light at the scales.

Calabrese started the 20-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman main event in 14th, but took advantage of numerous restarts and a fast car to move through the field and take the lead on lap 14. He went on to win over Cody Clark, Brian Bosrt, Tim Hartman Jr. and Tim Dwyer.
