Sunday’s featured race is the Coronation Cup Stakes, run over 5 1/2 furlongs on the Mellon Turf, and will be the Saratoga debut of Goin’ Good (5-2).

The Brad Cox trainee comes to the Spa following a trio of recent races in Kentucky, the last of which was a well-run win over similar competition at the same distance. Goin’ Good paced well in that race, then overpowered the contenders in the stretch, including Illegal Smile (9-2). She can be expected to run a similar race today, likely pacing behind Wink (10-1) or What a Trick (20-1) before breaking for home. She looks the part of a classic favorite in this race.

Mischieful (8-1) was supposed to make her turf debut in her last race at Churchill Downs, but the rain brought the race back to the dirt, where she won handily. Her form in that race suggested she would have won on any surface, and she appears ready to prove it. She seems undervalued at 8-1.

Illegal Smile ran well in her last race before conceding to Goin’ Good. A move to jockey John Velazquez could provide a spark. She may be part of a crowded front pack in the backstretch as this race features a lot of early speed, and it will be interesting to see if she holds her pace well — or pushes too hard, too early.

Star Devine (6-1) is a likely benefactor if the pace setters wear each other out, but some of her most important racing will likely be done early to secure a good position to break from. She cuts way back in distance from her last race, run at 1 1/16th miles. Her best race was her debut at six furlongs, and a return to a sprint could mean a return to form.
