HIGH NOTES: Scholarships, PB&J drive, backpack fundraiser

In Schenectady, the Schenectady Foundation, recently awarded $31,500 in scholarships to high school seniors in the county. A $10,000 Anna Hudson Erbacher Scholarship, to support students in Schenectady County with a passion for teaching, was each awarded to April Buechner of Schalmont High School and Haley Neufeld of Niskayuna High School. A $4,000 scholarship was awarded to Piper Cartier of Mohonasen High School. The Schenectady STEM Scholarship, awarded to a Schenectady high school student interested in science, technology, math, or engineering, was awarded to Grace Roberts. The $2,500 David. J. Goyette Memorial Vocational Scholarship, to help students get a degree in the skilled building trades or teach in the vocational field was awarded to Zachary Bradt of Duanesburg High School.

In Niskayuna, the Niskayuna Wild Turkeys Swim & Dive Team is hosting a peanut butter and jelly drive through July 30 to benefit Nisky NOW (Nutrition on Weekends), a program that serves food-insecure families in Niskayuna. Athletes and coaches of the team, as well as pool staff, are collecting peanut butter and jelly because they know Nisky NOW currently has an urgent need for these staples. Each week, the volunteers of Nisky NOW provide bags of food to 80 Niskayuna families. Until July 30, the Wild Turkeys will be collecting the peanut butter and jelly at the town pool at 2682 Aqueduct Road, as well as at 1177 Rosehill Boulevard.

In Amsterdam, Hill & Markes has launched a fundraiser to fill 1,000 backpacks with school supplies to help students in the upcoming school year. Employees of the family-owned wholesale distributor are engaged in the fundraiser.
