An even, competitive field is expected for Sunday’s featured race, the Grade III Shuvee Stakes, run over nine furlongs on the dirt. With the entrants rated so close, any advantage could be a potential difference-maker.
One of three entries from trainer Chad Brown, Dunbar Road (2-1), continues her trend of long layoffs between races. The 2019 Alabama Stakes winner has run well historically regardless of the time off, and has the best pure speed in the field. In a similar race, she fought back in the Grade I Distaff Stakes in November, overcoming being blocked in early to recover for a gutsy third. A better ride should make the difference here.
Crystal Ball (4-1) enters undefeated in 2021 over three races, but moves up in class for this race. Also moving up in class is Liberty M D
(30-1), who has yet to show the overall speed to be a traditional contender in a race like this one, but has run right to the level of her competition in each of her two wins. If she does the same today, she could prove to have been undervalued.
Royal Flag (5-2) has yet to finish outside the money in nine career starts and has the speed to contend today. She won a similar race with a good close in the Grade III Turnback the Alarm Handicap at this distance in November.
The best bet for Sunday will be Kaely’s Sister (3-5) in the seventh race. The Brad Cox trainee moves back under jockey Luis Saez, under whom she ran her best career race, winning by 10 3/4 lengths at six furlongs. A similar ride puts her in another class from the field.
Miss Interpret (6-1) is the best long shot on the card. The filly by Street Sense showed a marked improvement in her second start, placing second after battling in the stretch. Trainer Todd Pletcher gives her an extra half-furlong in this race, and her experience amidst a field of first-time starters may carry her the rest of the way.
