Race fans are being treated to a Grade II race Wednesday with a field of nine entered for the Honorable Miss Handicap, run over six furlongs on the Main Track. The eighth race will be highlighted by Bell’s the One (7-5), who looks to secure her fifth win in five tries at this distance.
The Neil Pessin-trainee has been in Grade I company for a full year, with the exception of her last race, the ungraded Rolexana Overnight Stakes on June 19. She ran well to secure the win that day under longtime jockey Corey Lanerie, who gets the mount again. A consistent runner, Bell’s the One should be counted on to stay off the pace until the last moment. So long as she is not boxed in late, she should be expected to be challenging in the stretch.
Lake Avenue (9-2) has demonstrated great running ability dating back to her win in her second race in the Grade II Demoiselle Stakes in December 2019, where she wired the field for a four-length win, but she has become a more consistent racer since the beginning of 2021. Her two wins this year came against a lower class, and her career has been made between seven- and nine-furlong races, but a move back to six furlongs gives her a chance to set the pace like she did as a 2-year-old.
Honey I’m Good (6-1) is moving up in class, but has competitive speed and a nose for the front, and the same can be said for Sadie Lady (12-1).
The best bet of the day is Quasar in the fourth race. While it may seem tough to back a mare with one win in 23 starts, Quasar has finished in the money in four of her last five races. On May 21, she ran a decent second behind Master of Hope, who went on to run even better in her follow-up at a higher class. The rest of the field is inconsistent, and if Quasar’s price stays about where it is at the morning line, she will have decent value.
In the sixth race, Beatbox (5-1) represents the best potential value bet of the day. This will be his second race off a layoff, and in his first race back, he displayed the type of late speed that tends to do well in races that combine this distance, surface, and class. Also entered in this race is Cody’s Wish (1-1), who should attract a lot of the win pool money and could potentially raise the odds for Beatbox. While Cody’s Wish has potential, he does not appear to be the sure thing that his odds suggest.
