ALBANY – A Rotterdam man arrested on child pornography charges in 2019 after an alert from a computer repair technician was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison.
Chandler Whittaker, 25, who was also identified as from Schenectady, pleaded guilty earlier to receipt and possession of child pornography.
He admitted earlier that between July and October 2014 and in January 2016 he downloaded several images of child pornography from the Internet. He also admitted to possessing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on multiple electronic devices between December 2018 and February 2019, officials said.
Whittaker was originally arrested in February 2019 by Rotterdam police on a tip from a computer repair store in the town, police said then.
An employee at Computer Repair and Technologies Inc on Altamont Avenue found questionable images on a computer and called police, police said then.
Investigators determined the computer contained more than 100 images containing child pornography and a video of Whittaker having sexual contact with an 8-year-old girl, police said then. Whitaker provided the passcode at the shop to unlock the computer, according to the federal complaint.
A subsequent search of Whittaker’s residence revealed an illegally modified AR 15 rifle, several illegal ammunition magazines, an electronic stun gun, two pairs of metal knuckles and 30.6 grams of marijuana, police said at the time.
Whittaker was charged locally with sexual abuse and weapons counts. The outcome of those cases could not be determined Thursday.
The charges related to the child pornography were pursued federally, leading to Thursday’s sentencing.
