SARATOGA COUNTY – Severe thunderstorms caused flash floods in Saratoga County and pushed rocks, tree limbs and soil onto half of the two-lane Spier Falls Road in Moreau just off Exit 17N on the Northway Thursday night, a county official said.

County Emergency Services Commissioner Carl Zeilman said he was unaware of any vehicles in the area at the time of the slide, and that there were no injuries due to the incident. But, the Saratoga County Highway Department had closed part of the road in the Moreau/Corinth area in order to do its work.

Zeilman was not sure how long the work would take but was sure the road would be closed at least through the night.

The commissioner also reported that Route 9 was under water at Ballard Road in Wilton and the town of Northumberland was experiencing minor flooding along Jewel Road. He cautioned all travelers to turn around when approaching submerged roads throughout the county and not try to go through them.

He also commended the firefighters, first responders, Highway Department and all others out working Thursday night. He pointed out that a lot of them were volunteers working in their own communities.

“Be patient with these individuals doing this work,” Zeilman said. “They just need to clear it and it will reopen once it is safe.”
