The Saratoga Dew Handicap is today’s feature race. Run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track, the third race of the day is scheduled to start with five experienced entrants, most notably Mrs. Orb (6-5).
Mrs. Orb tends to spend her time near the front of the pack, regardless of the race. She has finished in the money in 19 of 25 career races (76%). She is returning to the comforts of the New York circuit, where she had been running regularly until a detour to Pimlico on the Fourth of July, where she won the Caesar’s Wish Stakes by a half-length as the favorite. She also returns to her regular jockey, Dylan Davis, with whom she ran the majority of her races in 2020. A return to all her comforts should lead to another solid performance.
Simply Ravishing (7-2) had a difficult run in her last outing, giving way after the second call. It was an uncharacteristic run for the Grade I winner, and a return to form in this race should propel the filly back into graded company. She is the second pick based purely on her potential, but there is a chance that she will need another warm-up race before we see the same Simply Ravishing we saw last year at Saratoga.
Maiden Beauty (4-1) is looking to make a leap when she returns to stakes company for the first time since her run in the Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga in August 2019. This will be her first run since being claimed and will be trained by Robert Falcone Jr. She showed some of her best speed of the year in that last race, and Falcone must have seen something he liked to enter her here.
Espresso Shot (5-2) has been hit-or-miss recently. She finished behind Mrs. Orb twice since January, but has the speed to compete. She stretches out to nine furlongs, which she ran last year at Saratoga to a second-place finish. She could be dangerous to underestimate, but the risk appears worth it here.
The card’s best value is in the fifth race, and one can take their pick between Cozzy’s Attitude (5-1) or Silver Samurai (6-1), depending on what the tote says at post time. Cozzy’s Attitude kept pace with the winner in the stretch during his debut race, showing some fight in a fourth-place finish. He adds blinkers today for his second go at the Spa. Silver Samurai has two second-place finishes in two races, but each was pretty far back of the winner. Each has the ability to turn it up, and hopefully either will have the opportunity to provide a decent payout.
The best bet will be on Mihos (2-1) in the eighth race. His three most recent runs have been good enough to have won an average seven-furlong Allowance race at Saratoga. All the entrants in this race have been inconsistent finishers, so it is best to rely on that consistent speed here.
