EDITORIAL: Treat your taste buds during Schenectady Restaurant Week (Summer 2021 version)

Oh, Schenectady Restaurant Week, how our taste buds have missed you so.

If your dining experiences have been few and far between since the pandemic started, you finally have a chance to indulge your appetite, and to help local businesses survive these challenging economic times, by supporting participating restaurants in Schenectady’s annual Restaurant Week.

The first summertime version of annual winter event will take place all next week, running from Monday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Aug. 22.

Restaurant Week has been an annual late-winter centerpiece for the area since 2006. But because of the covid outbreak, this will be the first time it’s been held since March 2020.

And it promises an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of great food at very affordable prices, while taking advantage of the nice summer weather.

Throughout the week, nine participating restaurants in and around downtown Schenectady will offer special fixed menus for $30.

The menus include a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts.

Participating restaurants include: Dukes Chophouse at Rivers Casino at 1 Rush Street; Johnny’s Restaurant at 432 State Street; Katie O’Byrne’s Irish Pub at 121 Wall Street; Mexican Radio at 325 State Street; More Perreca’s Italian Kitchen at 31 N. Jay Street; Pho Queen at 96 Jay Street; Tops American Grill, Bakery & Bar at 351 Duanesburg Road, Rotterdam; Turf Tavern at 40 Mohawk Avenue, Scotia; and Zen Asian Bistro at 469 State Street.

When you visit, make sure you leave yourself time to walk around the city, visit other local businesses, maybe head over to the shoreline and spend some time with family and friends.

And you know, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one visit or just one restaurant during Restaurant Week. At this special price, you can mix it up. Italian. Mexican. Asian. Steak. Pub fare. Even vegetarian.

If you’re hungry, Schenectady is the place for you next week.

Please remember to be respectful of individual businesses’ requests for masking, social distancing and other safety protocols as covid variant cases continue to rise.

It’s highly recommended that you make a reservation.

And remember to tip well, beyond the set price of the special offer (You’re getting a great deal.). Wait staff and other restaurant employees are struggling economically, too. And be patient. They’re doing their absolute best to serve you.

We don’t usually get the opportunity to enjoy Restaurant Week during the summer.

We hope you’ll take advantage of the offer and that it will encourage you to come back again and again. Local businesses will thank you. And so will your wallet.

And so, of course, will your taste buds.
