High schools: Schalmont football beats Hudson Falls

The Schalmont football team started its season off with a 32-13 Class B win against Hudson Falls.

In the Week 1 victory, Schalmont led 26-0 at halftime. Sean Willis and Ryan Shultis each scored a pair of touchdowns for the Sabres. Willis scored on a 43-yard run and after recovering a blocked punt, while Shultis scored on runs of 12 and 50 yards.

Gloversville earned its second-straight road win, beating Lansingburgh 21-14 in a Class B game as running backs Kyle Robare and John Heimer combined for 167 rushing yards and scored all three of the team’s touchdowns.

Amsterdam powered to a 52-28 Class A win over South Glens Falls behind quarterback Jhai Vellon’s five first-half touchdown passes — three to Caesar Thompson, two to Louie Gonzalez. The win was the first for second-year Amsterdam head coach John Homich.

Shenendehowa defeated Queensbury 30-6 in a non-classification game. Queensbury led 6-3 at halftime, but the Plainsmen scored 27 unanswered points in the second half. Luke Plumadore, Patrick House, Michael McElrath and Carter Cukerstein each scored a touchdown for Shenendehowa.

Jake Iacobaccio scored on runs of 47 and 45 yards to lead Shaker to a 28-7 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Iacobaccio also threw an 87-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Newkirk for the Blue Bison, while Porter Ninstant capped the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown run. Luke Zoller scored the lone touchdown for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on a 3-yard run.

Niskayuna’s Dan Quinn was 21 of 36 passing for 326 yards, threw touchdowns to three different receivers and ran for a score in the Silver Warriors’ 27-6 win over Bethlehem. Jayson Black ran for 100 yards for Bethlehem.

Michael Bennett scored on runs of 29 and 2 yards to lead Columbia to a 14-7 victory over Saratoga Springs. Bennett scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter to lift Columbia to a comeback win. Saratoga Springs led 7-6 at halftime, and after three quarters.

Aiden Lochner had 12 carries for 145 yards and three touchdowns to lead Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk to a 32-7 victory over Broadalbin-Perth in a Class B football contest. Quarterback Nathanial Ray was 3 for 3 for 43 yards and a score for R-C-S.

Owen Sherman scored on a 3-yard run and Lukas Sherman scored on a 2-yard run to help Schuylerville post a 14-0 Class C victory over Hoosick Falls/Tamarac.

In a non-league game, Johnstown fell 46-0 to Norwich of Section IV.

GAME POSTPONED
A Week 1 football game between Fonda-Fultonville and Cobleskill-Richmondville was postponed Friday due to protocols related to the novel coronavirus pandemic within the Fonda-Fultonville program, Braves coach Sean Thompson said.

The teams, Thompson said, were “in a holding pattern” Friday evening to see if they’d be able to make up the game some time this weekend. Both Thompson and Cobleskill-Richmondville athletic director John Henry said it’s possible the teams could play Sunday.

Several Week 1 games were postponed or canceled for pandemic-related reasons, including Schenectady’s matchup with La Salle and Stillwater’s contest against Lake George.

SPARTANS SWEEP
Burnt Hills defeated Shaker 25-8, 25-13, 25-11 in a Suburban Council boys’ volleyball match. Aidan Calhoun led the Spartans with 13 assists, while each of Liam Calhoun and Ben Pearce contributed six kills.

SARATOGA CATHOLIC WINS THRILLER
Saratoga Catholic secured a 26-28, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 25-17 Wasaren League girls’ volleyball victory against Stillwater. Liz Best had a dozen aces in the win, Kara Wengert contributed 17 digs and Allison Motler had eight assists. For Stillwater, Peyton Morris contributed eight kills and five aces.

Fonda-Fultonville defeated Johnstown 25-13, 25-23, 25-13 in a non-league girls’ volleyball match. Fonda-Fultonville received nine kills from Marilyn Whitcavitch and 14 assists from Amber Cole. For Johnstown, Teianna Frasier had 17 assists, seven aces, five kills and five digs.

Allie Salvione had 17 assists and Zoie Tesi added 10 kills for Gloversville in a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 non-league victory over Schoharie.

Andrew Snell finished with four goals and an assist to lead Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville to a Western Athetic Conference victory over Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg.

Kenny Dennis scored in overtime to lift Mayfield to a 2-1 victory over Fort Plain.

Jermaine Bradley scored twice to lead Lansingburgh to a 4-1 Colonial Council victory over Mohonasen. Santiago Trujillo and Trae McIntyre also scored for the Knights. Justin Andriola scored the lone goal for Mohonasen.

Drew Kusek scored all three goals, including the overtime game-winning goal, to lift Schalmont to a 3-2 victory over La Salle.

Kyaw Lah Hsee, Haroon Pasha and Sa Kler Moo scored to lead Albany Academy to a 3-0 win over Cobleskill-Richmondville.

Jorge Munoz scored both goals to help Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons to a 2-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Schoharie.

MOHONASEN ROLLS TO WIN
Hannah Bachorik scored all four goals to power Mohonasen to a 4-0 victory over Lansingburgh in a Colonial Council contest. Courtney Bush added three assists for Mohonasen.

Gianna Viscusi scored three goals to lift Schalmont to a 4-2 victory over Holy Names in a contest.

Jill Sassanella scored twice to lead Broadalbin-Perth to a 4-0 Foothills Council victory over Johnstown. Mianna Barboza added a goal and two assists for B-P, and Maria Stewart had a goal and an assist.

Brooklyn Drago had two goals and an assist to lift Scotia-Glenville to a 9-1 victory over Gloversville. Susie Sidlauskas also scored twice for the Tartans. Melia Stoller scored the lone goal for Gloversville.

Sarah McMahon, Star Pflieger and Riley Keefer all scored twice to power Schuylerville to an 11-0 victory over Hudson Falls.

Shannon Zink scored twice to lead Duanesburg to a 5-1 win over Heatly in a non-league contest. Julianna Perillo added a goal and an assist for the Eagles.

Addyson Galuski netted a hat trick to power Waterford-Halfmoon to a win over Galway.

Sarah Harrow scored Niskayuna’s goal in a 4-1 loss to New Hartford. The game was part of the fifth annual NYSSCOGS New York State H.S. Girls Soccer Hall of Fame Induction and Tournament, which will run throughout the weekend at Niskayuna, Guilderland, Shenendehowa and Mechanicville schools. The hall of fame induction will take place 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Niskayuna High School,.

EGGLESTON LEADS SHENENDEHOWA
Kendall Eggleston had three goals and an assist to power Shenendehowa to a 5-0 Suburban Council win over Bethlehem. Sierra Fedden and Hannah Merritt each had a goal and an assist for Shen.

Natalie Faas scored the lone goal to lift Columbia to a victory over Niskayuna. Erin Dalton finished with four saves to post the shutout for the Blue Devils, while Julia Cropsy made four saves for Niskayuna.
