College notes: Union football moves up rankings

The Union College football team moved up to No. 13 in this week’s D3football.com Top 25 Poll.

Union improved to 2-0 on the season with a 62-13 road win last Saturday against Worcester State. Union next plays this Saturday against Springfield.

Union started the season ranked No. 15, and moved up one spot after each of its wins.

UNION HOCKEY SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ON SALE

Union College announced single-game tickets for all of its men’s hockey games went on sale Monday, including the team’s home exhibition game Oct. 2 against RPI.

In making the announcement, Union noted that “all spectators must abide by all Union College health and safety protocols in order to attend games, including the wearing of masks at all times while indoors, including inside Messa Rink.”

Tickets may be purchased on unionathleticstickets.com. Union’s first regular-season home game is Oct. 15 against Colorado College.

STRAUB, PHAIR WIN GOLF AWARDS

SUNY Cobleskill’s Ethan Straub, a senior competing for the first time on the school’s golf team, was named Monday the North Atlantic Conference’s golfer and rookie golfer of the week.

Straub captured the first individual tournament win of his career last Saturday. He shot a three-over-par 75 at Colonie Golf & Country Club to win the Russell Sage College Fall Invitational.

Russell Sage College’s senior men’s golfer Stuart Phair was named Monday the Empire 8 Men’s Golfer of the Week for the second-straight week after finishing second behind Phair.

Phair shot a 77 and led the Gators to win the team title at the event.

SEVERAL RPI ATHLETES EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS

A variety of RPI athletes won Liberty League awards Monday.

RPI junior Alex Mednikova won the singles championship at the Union Invitational on her way to being named the Liberty League’s singles performer of the week in women’s tennis. Mednikova teamed with Rani Jones to win the event’s doubles championships, too, which earned the duo the doubles team of the week award.

Aiden Drover-Mattinen was named the men’s tennis rookie of the week. Drover-Mattinen advanced to championship matches in both singles and doubles at the Siena College Invitational. Teaming with Max Safanox, Drover-Mattinen won the doubles title match.

Matt Lecky was named the men’s cross country performer of the week. Lecky won the Ron Stonitsch Invitational, which was hosted by Vassar College, and finished in a meet record time of 18:53.5.

Nia Goddard earned women’s cross country performer of the week. She won the Ron Stonitsch Invitational at 19:01.6, and led RPI to a team win.

Josh Gaudiano scored a team-high four goals last week for the men’s soccer team, which won two of three games. Gaudiano was named the league’s top offensive player of the week.

SKIDMORE’S MCGOUGH HONORED

Skidmore’s Kevin McGough finished 10th out of 112 in the Middlebury Duke Nelson with a two-round total of 146.

McGough had an eagle and five birdies over the 36 holes.
