Malta Avenue Elementary School in the Ballston Spa Central School District on Tuesday was named one of just 19 schools in New York to earn designation as a National Blue Ribbon School.

The federal designation was given to 325 schools across the country this year, a recognition of a school’s overall academic performance of its progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups.

“The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content,” according to a media release from the U.S. Department of Education.

The school of 362 students was nominated as an “exemplary high performing school,” which means it scored among the highest in the state on state assessments or national tests.
