Thanks to a disciplined walking regimen, 47-year-old Mark Taylor recently dropped 60 pounds and is looking a little more like the 18-year-old kid that won a national junior bowling championship.
Taylor, a Fairfield, Connecticut, native now living in Rotterdam, has been competing against some of the best bowlers in the country for three decades. He wants the next generation of keglers to enjoy the same kind of rush he’s experienced. That’s why he’s been helping to run the Capital District Youth Scholarship Tour, which begins its 12th season Saturday at Del Lanes in Delmar.
“Really, it all goes back to July 17, 1993, when I won the national junior title,” Taylor recalled. “I kind of felt from that point forward I needed to be an ambassador for our sport. I’ve been passionate about bowling since I was a little boy. When I won that tournament, I put that seed of running these kinds of events in the back of my mind. I remember all of those Saturday afternoons traveling to compete in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island. I had the opportunity to see the country because of my bowling ball.”
Taylor, a graduate of Sacred Heart University and Penn State, where he got his masters of science degree, is extremely proud of the CDYST. Some of the best bowlers in the Capital Region competed in the events, which offer scholarships to the winners in various age divisions. PWBA standout Liz Kuhlkin won the very first CDYST tournament. Justin Carl went on to bowl collegiately after his run in the CDYST, and Zach Doty became a Junior Gold champion, as did Tom Hankey Jr., who has seven national junior championships under his belt. Schenectady native Lauren Piotrowski, who was the national bowler of the year at Pikeville (Kentucky), and former SUNY Schenectady NJCAA All-American Jen Lemke also got their starts in the CDYST.
“I came across this stat the other day when I was writing a recommendation for one of the girls. Every girl who has won a CDYST tournament and has gone on to college at a bowling school has become an All-American,” Taylor said. “It’s all about opening doors and exposing them to the challenging lane conditions of the type they will see in college and beyond.”
Although many people know Taylor through his work with the popular CDYST junior series of tournaments, he’s also put together an outstanding career of his own on the lanes. Despite only bowling once a week for the last several years in Eric Morrett’s Capital District Challenge League at East Greenbush Bowling Center — where he is the all-time leader in weekly victories with 27 — Taylor has produced 33 perfect games and 22 800 triples.
His career-best triple was an 868 in January of 2006. He started with a 268 and then fired back-to-back 300 games.
“I’ll never forget that day because it turned out to be my grandmother’s last birthday,” he said. “My only two misses were swishing 7-pins that both wobbled and didn’t fall.”
Besides winning the national junior championship, Taylor said his other most notable performance on the lanes was making the cut at the 2008 U.S. Open.
“I felt like it was mission accomplished after that,” he said. “Sometimes I have a hard time deciding which one was my biggest accomplishment.”
Taylor also finished fifth in an ETM side tournament at the USBC Championships. Two of the four bowlers who placed ahead of him were Rhino Page of the PBA Tour and Tom Hess, who recently won the USBC Senior Masters.
“In 2009, I shot my all-time best of a 2,007 in the all-events at the USBC Championships. I had 24 strikes in a row at one point,” he noted.
In July, Taylor’s team finished 18th in the USBC Championships.
“It’s the most fun I ever had in a tournament,” he said. “I hooked up with a team that included one of my former college teammates. They were all accomplished players on the team, and we got off to a good start. Then we had a very good second game, as well. We put ourselves in position after five frames where we could have taken over the tournament lead in the third game. But unfortunately, we had a few bad breaks and a few bad shots that stunted our momentum. We ended up shooting 3,264, but a few missed single pins and a few bad breaks kept us from shooting a 3,400.”
Taylor’s style hasn’t changed much in 30 years, but he has become more versatile.
“I haven’t made any big changes in my game, but when I was younger, I was a speed-dominant down-and-in type of player,” he explained. “But around the time of the 2006 U.S. Open, I started working on becoming more of a shot-maker instead of just firing the ball down the lane. I’ve been really working on matching my speed and rev rate. I would say I didn’t change my style, but I refined it. I’ve learned from my experiences at the highest levels and put those experiences to good use.”
As a youngster, Taylor was a big fan of Mark Roth and the late Earl Anthony, but Dave Ozio became one of his favorites thanks to a chance meeting.
“I used to go to Windsor Locks to watch the PBA Tour, and one Friday night after the last round of match play, I was watching Dave Ozio working with a younger pro,” Taylor said. “They were practicing together, and Dave was kind of giving this young pro a lesson. I was listening in for about 10 minutes, and Ozio could tell I was listening, so he invited me over and talked to me about everything he was trying to show the younger player. I really appreciated that, and Dave Ozio became somebody I kept an eye on over the years. He had a textbook style — very smooth.”
A big fan of Brunswick bowling products, Taylor’s recent weight loss has helped him get his game back in top shape after a few down years.
“[Monday] was my 428th day in a row that I walked at least 10,000 steps,” Taylor stated proudly. “It all started by accident. Because of my job of building forecasting models, there are a lot of long days, and one night in early June of last year I needed to get out of the house for a while. The kids were asleep, and I needed to let off some steam. So I walked 25-30 minutes. It was fun, and later that week I got on the scales and discovered I lost 5 pounds. I kept it going, and now I’ve lost about 60 pounds. I think the weight loss has definitely helped my bowling in terms of consistency and execution. I’m able to project the ball down the lane better now.”
Taylor and wife Elisha have a son who is almost 6 years old and a daughter who is 4. The longtime meteorologist, who currently works for New York Independent System Operator, is now bowling Thursday nights in a doubles league at Town & Country. He says he has two remaining bowling goals.
“The first goal is to win a NEBA [New England Bowling Association] tournament, and the second is when I turn 50, I want to get my PBA card,” he said.
