Section II football power rankings heading into Week 7

Week 7 high school football action starts Friday.

Before that, The Daily Gazette is rolling out its latest look at the top teams in each Section II classification.

Rankings were voted on by a panel comprised of Daily Gazette sports editor Michael Kelly, staff writers Stan Hudy, Adam Shinder and Paul Wager, and contributors Jim Schiltz and Will Springstead.

CLASS AA

Coming off back-to-back wins against two of the classification’s top teams, No. 1 Shaker (6-0) travels this week to Bethlehem. No. 2 CBA (6-1) bounced back from its loss against Shaker with a 28-0 win against Saratoga Springs last week. Before a Week 8 showdown with CBA, No. 3 Shenendehowa (5-1) plays top rival Saratoga Springs this week. No. 4 Guilderland (4-2) hosts CBA in one of Week 7’s best games. For No. 5 Saratoga Springs (2-4), its Week 7 home game against the Plainsmen is the second game in a three-week stretch that sees the Blue Streaks play the top-three teams in this poll.

CLASS A

No. 1 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (5-1) hasn’t lost since its Week 1 game against Class AA’s Shaker, but this week’s trip to Niskayuna brings with it a strong challenge for the Spartans. No. 2 Amsterdam (5-0) is one of four undefeated teams left in Section II, and heads to La Salle for a pivotal Capital Division game this week. No. 3 Averill Park (5-2) is coming off an overtime win against No. 4 La Salle (3-3). After falling at Averill Park, No. 5 Niskayuna (5-2) got back on track last week with a 34-8 win against South Glens Falls/Fort Edward.

CLASS B

No. 1 Glens Falls (5-1) is on track to pick up a forfeit win this week from Broadalbin-Perth, which is unable to play this week’s game because of a lack of available players. No. 2 Schalmont (5-1) is on a four-game winning streak, and will end its regular-season with games against Scotia-Glenville and Mohonasen. After its loss to Schalmont, No. 3 Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (5-1) rebounded with a 34-6 win against Mohonasen. No. 4 Gloversville (4-3) hosts No. 5 Hudson Falls (3-2) in a crucial North Division game this week. 

This week: Glens Falls, Schalmont, Ravena, Gloversville, Hudson Falls, Mohonasen (also receiving votes)

CLASS C

No. 1 Schuylerville (7-0) has already clinched a top seed for the Section II playoffs. After a 30-0 win against Mechanicville, No. 2 Hoosick Falls/Tamarac (5-1) travels to winless Corinth/Hadley-Luzerne this week. No. 3 Watervliet (6-1) takes on Hudson in one of the classification’s top games this week, while No. 4 Fonda-Fultonville (4-3) takes on Mechanicville after defeating Johnstown last week. No. 5 Hudson (5-2) has averaged 53.8 points per game in its wins and seven in its losses.

This week: Schuylerville, Hoosick Falls/Tamarac, Watervliet, Fonda, Hudson (ARV)

CLASS D

No. 1 Greenwich (6-0) defeated No. 2 Stillwater (4-1) 27-19 when the teams played earlier this week, and Greenwich has won all its other games by at least 16 points and Stillwater has won each of its games by at least 21 points. Stillwater’s 21-point win came last week against No. 3 Warrensburg/North Warren/Bolton (5-2), which has lost back-to-back games against this classification’s top-two teams. No. 4 Cambridge/Salem (4-3) plays No. 5 Chatham (3-2) this week. 

This week: Greenwich, Stillwater, Warrensburg/North Warren/Bolton, Cambridge/Salem, Chatham
