High schools: Galway clinches WAC girls’ volleyball title

Galway clinched the Western Athletic Conference girls’ volleyball league championship Thursday with a 20-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 victory against Fonda-Fultonville.

Galway’s Julia Reedy had 17 kills and 10 digs in the win, while Jayden DeVellis had 39 digs to push her career digs total past 1,000.  Amber Kolpakas added 12 kills in the win, while Trishelle Oliver produced eight kills and four blocks, and Grace O’Brien contributed seven kills as Galway pushed its winning streak in league play to 53 matches. 

For Fonda-Fultonville, Marilyn Whitcavitch produced nine kills and 10 digs, Amber Cole had 17 assists, Samara Hunt contributed 17 digs and Maddy Mott had nine digs.

Galway improved to 13-0 overall and Fonda-Fultonville dropped to 12-1.

Mekeel Christian Academy won 25-16, 25-19, 25-20 against Canajoharie/Fort Plain. Promise Mitchell and Jahdey Jackson each had seven kills, and Gabrielle Lane contributed five aces in the win. For Canajoharie/Fort Plain, Talia Viscusi had eight digs.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons defeated Schoharie 25-17, 26-24, 25-19. Kathryn Braun had 20 assists in the win, while Victoria Jaworowski produced six kills and Julia Jaworowski contributed 14 kills. For Schoharie, Rachel Hyatt had eight kills and Alexis Dennis added 10 digs.

Duanesburg won 25-15, 25-14, 25-13 against OESJ. Heather Black had seven assists and Ella Moses contributed five kills in the win. For OESJ, Brooke Trumble produced six kills, five assists and five digs, and Jade Dygret had five digs.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won 25-6, 25-12, 25-12 against Schenectady. In the Suburban Council win, Danielle Debonis had 23 assists and eight aces, and Callie Chevalier had 11 kills and 10 digs.

Saratoga Springs defeated Averill Park 25-17, 25-14, 26-24.  Brianna Cassia had 15 digs and 12 assists in the win, while Brooke Poutre and Sam Tracy each contributed five kills. Also in the win, Lili Yefimenko had eight digs.

Shaker won 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 25-19 against Albany. Shaker’s Peyton Strand had 15 kills, Layla Shipley contributed 19 assists, Brianna Hardwick had 20 assists and Geena Fratangelo contributed 15 digs. For Albany, Sydney Speanburg dished 34 assists and Tori Smith Wyld produced 21 kills.

Shenendehowa topped Columbia 25-10, 25-17, 25-20. Emma Paliwodzinkski had 35 assists and a dozen digs for the Plainsmen, while Kasia Barletta contributed 28 digs, Reagan Ennist had 13 digs and Grace Almeida produced nine kills. For Columbia, Arricca Silliman had 15 assists and Leah Phillips contributed nine kills.

Colonie won 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23 against Niskayuna. Shannon Coyle had 14 kills, Macie Trimarchi produced nine kills and Charley Herrington dished 19 assists in the win. For Niskayuna, Audrey Mason had 34 assists and 15 digs, Ava Schewe contributed 15 kills and a dozen digs, and Laura Mason had 32 digs.

Sarah Bozzo had 31 assists and four aces in Ballston Spa’s 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 win against Bethlehem, while Maggie Lyon contributed 11 kills and three digs, and Emily Robbie added seven kills and 10 digs. 

BELL, JOHNS STAR IN WIN

Kaurice Bell and Austin Johns each had two goals and an assist, and sixth-seeded Middleburgh scored all of its goals after halftime in a 4-0 win over Hadley-Luzerne on Thursday in the first round of the Section II Class C boys’ soccer tournament. Ben Croote made two saves to record the shutout for Middleburgh. Hadley-Luzerne got 16 saves from goalie Zack Caldwell.

Harry Rubinstein scored the game-winning goal for Stillwater in its 1-0 win against Doane Stuart.

In Mayfield’s 5-0 win against Warrensburg/Bolton, Kenny Dennis and Britain Goodemote each had two goals. Brody Page added a goal and an assist, and Aiden Martuscello made two saves in the shutout.

VISCUSI SCORES 3

Gianna Viscusi had three goals and Gianna Cirilla contributed two in top-seeded Schalmont’s 8-0 win against Fonda-Fultonville in the first round of the Section II Class B girls’ soccer playoffs. Also for Schalmont, Simone Cassano had a goal and three assists.

Mianna Barboza and Molly Russom each scored two goals in Broadalbin-Perth’s 8-1 win against Catskill. Carissa Calderone, Brooke Bush, Harley Lindwall and Jill Sassanella each added a goal in the win, while Jackie Fisher had two assists, and Rossum and Huckans each had one.

Morgan Brewer, Addison Fogarty and Riley Taylor each scored a goal in Holy Names’ 3-0 win against Albany Academy.

Greenville defeated Catholic Central 4-0. Emersyn Grupe had a goal and an assist and Ella Grupe had two assists, while Josie O’Hare made six saves in the shutout.

Mechanicville eliminated Johnstown with a 4-0 win. Nevaeh D’Aloia registered two goals and an assist, and Anna Izzo had a goal and an assist. Olivia Horan made eight saves in the shutout, while Andrea Manners made a dozen saves for Johnstown.

MIRABILE LIFTS SHAKER

Shaker won 3-2 against Bethlehem in double-overtime. Karleigh Mirabile scored each goal for Shaker and Caitlyn McInerney scored both of Bethlehem’s goals in the Section II Class A field hockey tournament first-round game.

Guilderland posted a 4-0 win against Niskayuna. Skyler Van Wormer had two goals and Chelsea King contributed three assists, while Julia Cropsey made 10 saves for Niskayuna.

Saratoga Springs topped Columbia 5-0. Aubrey Ide and Lily Gutch each scored two goals, while Columbia goalie Maile Wargacki made 28 saves.
