High schools: Scotia-Glenville girls, Queensbury boys run to Foothills Council cross country titles

The Scotia-Glenville girls and Queensbury boys took home the team titles in the Foothills Council cross country championships, held Monday at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Scotia-Glenville runners swept both individual championships, with Stephanie James winning the girls’ race and Tyler Greene capturing the boys’ crown.

In the girls’ race, James finished the 3.04-mile course in 19 minutes, 33.48 seconds, with Queensbury’s Maddie Powers (19:42.64) and Miranda Habshi (19:43.00) following behind in second and third, respectively. Schuylerville’s Megan Vianese (19:47.83) and South Glens Falls’ Lily McNulty (19:55.79) rounded out the top five.

Scotia-Glenville won the team championship with 45 points, 15 points in front of runner-up Queensbury. Broadalbin-Perth, which was led by Emma Frasier (ninth, 20:54.35) and Emma Murphy (10th, 21:02.80) finished third with 89 team points.

Amsterdam competed with an incomplete team of just two runners, paced by Briana Kelly finishing 19th in 21:50.36

In the boys’ race, Scotia-Glenville’s Greene won in 15:35.36, less than four seconds ahead of Queensbury’s Jack Hicks (15:39.02). Scotia-Glenville also had the third- and seventh-place finishers in Patrick Allen (16:47.94) and Liam Cowdrey (17:17.89), but Queensbury placed six runners in the top 13 to finish with 40 team points and edge Scotia-Glenville, which finished with 47, for the team championship. Glens Falls was third with 89 points.

Broadalbin-Perth took fifth in the team race, led by Connor Couperus (eighth, 17:22.91), with Johnstown finishing seventh paced by Alex Cwiakala (19th, 18:09.75) and Trey Naselli (20th, 18:10.98), and Amsterdam in eighth led by Joseph Santiago (33rd, 19:21.77).

Cara Lallier had eight aces and six digs in Columbia’s 25-6, 25-22, 25-14 Suburban Council girls’ volleyball victory over Schenectady. Arricca Silliman had 18 assists and five kills for the Blue Devils, and Abby Silliman added 16 digs.

Bella Mahar and Emily Prest had 14 kills each to lead Averill Park past Niskayuna 26-24, 21-25, 17-25, 26-28. Ava Schewe led the Silver Warriors (3-11) with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Saratoga Springs got past Ballston Spa 26-24, 25-17, 20-25, 16-25, 25-15. Brooke Poutre had 13 kills, five blocks and two aces to the Blue Streaks (8-5). The Scotties (7-6) were led by Carlie Koebbeman with 17 kills, 11 digs and three blocks.

Colonie defeated Albany 25-15. 25-10, 22-25, 25-15. Shannon Coyle led the Garnet Raiders (8-5, 10-6) with 10 kills and 14 digs.

In the Western Athletic Conference, Hannah Borksi had 12 service points and seven aces to lead Duanesburg past Berne-Knox-Westerlo 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

Nataley Caponera scored twice, leading OESJ to a 4-1 victory over Salem in the quarterfinals of the Section II Class D girls’ soccer tournament. Jordan DeNinno added a goal and an assist. Sydney Schell also scored for OESJ.
