Shifting priorities and an assortment of physical challenges have taken a toll on Jessica Aiezza’s bowling game. But, when the self-described “feel player” gets in the zone, she still flashes the same form that made her one of the best bowlers in Capital Region history.
Aiezza, a 41-year-old graduate of both Mechanicville High School, where she was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame, and of Morehead State, where she won a pair of national championships, remains passionate about the sport. The former Jessica DeCrescente was once one of the best, perhaps even the very best female kegler in the area, especially among the lefty ranks.
Yet the devoted mother of two and wife to Lee Aiezza, a standout bowler himself, spends little time on her favorite pastime these days.
“My family is my main focus and priority,” Aiezza said this week. “I’m not going to deny that. I haven’t put as much time and effort into my bowling as I would like to. As I get older, priorities shift and change. My kids are very active in sports and life in general. I’m a professional chauffeur for them.”
Her son, Maddox, also likes to bowl but is much more passionate about baseball. He recently got the opportunity to meet Shenendehowa High School product and World Series champion pitcher Ian Anderson and considered it one of the highlights of his young life. Her daughter, Lila, recently won a softball championship and earned a black belt in taekwondo. Jessica spent much of the summer and early fall coordinating her kids’ activities and driving them around.
“Time goes by so quickly,” she explained. “I remember when I was at the women’s NYS Queens championship a couple of years ago, and my son was home. He was into taekwondo back then, and he was trying to become a grand champion, which means he finished first in all three disciplines of the sport. He came in first in the first two events, and I was crying because I wasn’t there to watch and support him. I lost my focus and felt like a horrible mother. As it turned out, he didn’t win the third title. He’s stopped taekwondo now. Baseball is his No. 1 thing.”
So, instead of practicing or competing in summer tournaments, Aiezza devoted the majority of her time to her kids and her husband. That’s one of the reasons why she has been in an early-season slump in her only league this year, the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League at Towne Bowling Academy.
“The last few years, I’ve been off to a slow start. Maybe it’s because I’ve chosen not to bowl in the summer,” she said. “It usually takes me a while to get going. It also seems that since I’ve hit 40, it’s been one physical ailment after another, and it doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. It’s been a fine line balancing bowling and the pain. You’ve got to consider how enjoyable it is with my priorities shifting so much. But what I enjoy about bowling is all the relationships and friendships I’ve been in.”
Aiezza’s physical challenges included a couple of bariatric surgeries four years ago. She and her husband lost a combined total of more than 100 pounds, and although Lee’s surgery went well, Jessica endured some complications, forcing her to endure four corrective procedures.
The former physician’s assistant also broke her elbow around Christmas a couple of years ago. She’s been suffering through a painful bunion on one of her toes on her right foot. She was treating it with cortisone but doctors say they can’t give her any more, and the toe might require surgery. Meanwhile, she also suffers from kidney stones. She had an extremely painful episode during the USBC Women’s Nationals last spring.
“I was in a lot of pain leading up to the nationals, and I didn’t know if I could bowl, but I didn’t want to lose my place on the team, and we couldn’t get a sub,” she said. “I could barely walk I was in so much pain, so my husband got a wheelchair for me. I was on pain medicine and I managed to get through the day. We went to the emergency room, but they couldn’t find anything. Later, we went back to my urologist, and they found some kidney stones hidden in my system. It seems like I get them every six months or so, just like clockwork.”
Despite her numerous physical troubles, Aiezza found her game last week with a 772 triple. A few weeks ago, subbing for good friend Liz Kuhlkin in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league, she fired a four-game total of 1,021 with no opens.
“I’m not a very technical bowler,” she said. “I can change hand positions, but if things aren’t going well, I’d rather just change balls. Monday night, I started with my Obsession solid. It’s my benchmark ball. But I couldn’t get the 7-pin out. So I switched to the new Hammer Black Widow Ghost, and it worked out great.”
By the way, Aiezza is a member of the Hammer company staff.
“Like I’ve said before, I’m a feel player,” Aiezza said. “I was in a pretty drab place there for a while this season. It just wasn’t fun for me. It hurts when I bowl, and when I’m not bowling well, I’m also hurting my team. Sometimes, I wonder why I keep doing this and at what point do I just say uncle and stop bowling. But I love this game so much. It’s all I’ve ever known. I’ve bowled longer than I can remember.”
Aiezza definitely has many fond memories in her sport. At Mechanicville High School, she bowled on the varsity team from seventh through 12th grades. The five-time team captain was the Colonial Council MVP twice and she earned a spot on the Section II Class C/D championship team several times. She was a member of the overall Section II state championship team as a junior and a senior. By the way, she was Mechanicville’s valedictorian when she graduated with a 97.5 GPA in 1998.
At Morehead State, Aiezza helped her team win national championships in both 2000 and 2002. She was the Bowling Proprietors Association of America’s Female College Bowler of the Year in 2000 and was an All-American twice.
Aiezza owns 49 perfect games and close to 30 800 triples. She held the nation’s top average in both 2006-07 (237.56) and in 2011-12 (241.98). In 2015, she placed first in the team event, the doubles and the singles at the NYS USBC Women’s Tournament, setting national record for all-events with a 2,388.
She also has numerous Empire State Games bowling medals, including five golds, and won the 2010 Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show Super Bowl Doubles in 2010. She’s rolled a high triple of 838 on two occasions.
Last spring, Aiezza joined up with Kuhlkin, Suzie Morine and old friend Robin Orlikowski to capture the USBC Women’s National Championship in the eagle division.
“That’s the biggest thing I’ve done in my bowling career since college,” she said. “Individual achievements are one thing, but team championships are the biggest for me. When our team got together, Robin, my old college teammate, hadn’t met Liz or Suzie before. It was our first time bowling together. But we didn’t need much communication. All of us were in the groove. It was surreal. We put up a big score early, and it held on.”
Aiezza says that she remains competitive but accepts her limitations, based on her responsibilities and her physical condition.
“I know a lot of what is happening comes with aging,” she said. “But I’m in a place right now where it’s all about my kids. That’s my priorities. But I still love the game.”
