Area colleges: UAlbany women’s volleyball loses in America East tournament final

BALTIMORE — The UAlbany women’s volleyball team’s bid to win the America East tournament came up painfully short on Saturday.

Top-seeded UMBC overcame a two-set deficit to beat the second-seeded Great Danes 22-25, 18-25, 25-10, 25-19, 15-10 in the final at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

The Retrievers earn the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Great Danes’ season ends at 14-15.

Danielle Tedesco led UAlbany with 19 kills and seven blocks. Grace Cozad had 14 kills, and Oren Abutbul added 13 kills for the Great Danes.
Malea Stanton had 48 assists for UAlbany, Charlotte Macken collected 14 digs and Regan Wright had 13 digs.

“The team battled tonight and, unfortunately, came up just short,” UAlbany head coach Josh Pickard said. “We came out of the gate strong and couldn’t keep that momentum through the match. Congrats to Malea and Oren on being named All-Tournament. They both played very well and gave us a great chance to win.”
