In the Pocket: Mohonasen grad Tom Egan Jr. rolls back-to-back perfect games

Tom Egan Jr. dreamed of becoming an architect and studied at Hudson Valley Community College to pursue that passion. But he soon realized he was more suited to building things and using his hands as a construction worker rather than designing and planning them out. He’s currently installing gutters, and those strong hands and fingers have served him well both at making a living and at excelling in his favorite hobby.

The 30-year-old Mohonasen High School graduate recently achieved one of his personal goals on the lanes when he rolled back-to-back perfect games during an 846 triple in the Macejka’s Edgewood Independent League at Towne Bowling Academy.

“I’ve got more than 10 perfect games, but I’ve got a few more 800 triples than I do 300s,” Egan said. “I don’t get too many 300s in any one year, and any time I get seven or eight strikes in a row, a perfect game is on my radar. They are still very special to me.

“On my first one the other night, it felt just like any other 300 game I’ve ever had. I wanted to get it, naturally, and you tend to concentrate more on every shot when you get that close. So when I got my first 300, I was obviously very happy, but it never occurred to me to do it again.”

Yet Egan kept on striking.

“After my third ball in the 10th frame of that first game, it was like starting all over again. You can’t worry about the first game. I was riding that 300 game high, and I just kept bowling like it was my first one,” Egan said.

Egan tried to stay relaxed, but his body had other ideas.

“After you’ve bowled a few 300 games, you still get nervous. I get nervous every time,” he admitted. “You want it so badly, and it’s not every day that you bowl a 300 game. So, I just tried to treat it like any other time I was going after one. But I will say that in my second 300 game of the night, it felt just like the very first time I ever tried for one. The ball felt like it was 50 pounds. My wrists got weak, and my knees were shaking. I thought I’d never experience that feeling again.”

Egan is no novice. He currently carries a very solid average in the mid 230s and once averaged 234 while bowling for Mohonasen High School.

“I’ve been bowling all my life,” he said. “I’ve had a bowling ball in my hand since I was 5 years old. My mom and dad and my grandfather originally taught me how to bowl, but I’ve had so many other people helping me as I was growing up with the game at Towne Bowling Academy. People like Bill Nolan, Bill Houseknecht, Frank Manell and Kenny Hall all helped me shape my game, and in high school, my coaches, Bob Tedesco Jr. and Bob Martinez, also helped me quite a lot.”

Egan said he prefers to keep the ball in front of him and play more direct. He also uses equipment that doesn’t necessarily hook as dramatically as some brands.

“I’ve been kind of a down-and-in type of bowler and pretty much played straight up the boards my whole life,” Egan said. “Now, I’m using a ball that allows me to open up the lanes a little bit more, so I can get up and around certain spots on the lane, but I don’t hook it a lot. I’m using a Columbia 300 Dynamic Swing. I’ve had Columbia products in my bag since high school and even into college. That’s been my primary brand.”

Egan recalls winning a Section II bowling title at Mohonasen his junior year, and although the Mighty Warriors didn’t repeat during his senior campaign, he did make the state team as an individual all-star.

As an adult, Egan’s bowling has been limited to one night a week, although this year he is also subbing in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday nights at Towne Bowling Academy.

“I’ve always wanted to become more competitive in the game, but the jobs I had required working weekends. This year, I’ve got a new job with weekends off, so now, hopefully, I can do more bowling in tournaments on the weekend,” he said.

Egan’s recent pair of perfect games resulted in an excellent triple as he finished off the night with a 246, but that’s not his career best.

“I once rolled an 856 with a 300 game and a 279 included,” he said.
