SARATOGA SPRINGS — A local motorist was allegedly racing another driver when he lost control of his sedan and overturned on Route 9 Thursday afternoon, a state police spokesperson said Friday.

Jesus M. Rodriguez Candelario, 35, of Saratoga Springs, sustained minor injuries, according to Trooper Kerra Burns, the department’s spokeswoman.

The accident occurred just after 4 p.m.

State police determined Candelario, who was driving a Nissan Maxima, and a second unknown vehicle were headed south on Route 9 “at a high rate of speed and passing other vehicles in the median.”

Candelario lost control of his car, left the roadway and struck an embankment before returning to the road and overturning, Burns said.

Candelario has since been released from Albany Medical Center.

He was cited for multiple offenses, including reckless driving and a first offense of an illegal speed contest, both unclassified misdemeanors.
