SCHENECTADY – City police visited a city resident battling terminal cancer on his birthday, gifting him an American flag, a St. Michael challenge coin and a patch.
Brien McEckron, 50, received the gifts with his mother and son present. She also gave her son his baby shoes.
Officers stopped by Monday after McEckron’s mother reached out to the chief’s office recently about her son’s impending birthday, saying he had always looked up to the police and fire departments and asked if they could do anything, police Lt. Ryan Macherone said.
The officers presented the flag after the mother mentioned he would like one, Macherone said. She indicated she’d buy it herself, but the officers got together and got him one themselves and added the patch and challenge coin, Macherone said later.
