The New Year’s Eve performance planned at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs has been canceled.

Opera singer Zachary James and pianist Laurie Rogers were slated to perform a mix of Broadway and classical songs in a show that was to begin at 7 p.m.

James is known to local audiences for his portrayal of the title role in Opera Saratoga’s production of “Man of La Mancha” last summer. The bass baritone also created the role of Lurch in “The Addams Family” and has performed in “South Pacific” and “Coram Boy.”

Rogers recently celebrated her 10th anniversary as Opera Saratoga’s head of music staff and director of the company’s Youth Artist Program.

“Due to the steep rise in COVID-19 cases and the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant, and in an effort to keep our performers and audience members safe and healthy, Opera Saratoga has made the difficult decision to cancel our New Year’s Eve concert at UPH,” the organization said in a statement.

In lieu of the live concert, James and Rogers will video record the program at UPH, and ”A New Year’s Celebration with Zachary James” will be made available as a free video broadcast on Saturday, New Year’s Day.

To watch the video broadcast, visit www.operasaratoga.org anytime after 1 p.m. on Jan. 1. Access to the free video will be available through Jan. 8.
