COLONIE – A late Monday afternoon chase in Colonie led to Clifton Park via the Northway and to the driver’s arrest, Colonie police said.
No injuries were reported in the incident, but the arrest led to a brief closure of Interstate 87, police said.
Arrested was Omar M. Alqahtani, 21, of Albany. He faces two felony counts, one each of first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal mischief, police said.
The incident began at about 4:15 p.m. Monday as a Colonie officer spotted a vehicle traveling on Wolf Road with multiple flat tires, police said. The officer then spotted the driver commit several traffic violations.
The vehicle left the roadway at one point, drove across sidewalks and struck utility boxes on the side of Wolf Road, police said.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, police said. Instead, the driver proceeded onto the Northway.
Colonie officers and state troopers then gave chase until the vehicle became disabled north of Exit 9, police said.
The driver refused to exit the vehicle, but was ultimately removed and taken into custody, police said.
Algahtani was also charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer and reckless driving, misdemeanors, and issued multiple vehicle and traffic violations, police said.
Algahtani was arraigned and his driver’s license suspended. He was released to return to court later, police said.
