Siena women’s basketball beats Marist for second straight win

POUGHKEEPSIE — After starting the season losing its first 10 games, the Siena women’s basketball team is on a winning streak.

The Saints overcame a 29-24 halftime deficit Thursday to beat Marist 69-53 in a MAAC game at McCann Arena.

It was the Saints’ first victory Red Foxes in 10 tries. It’s Siena’s first winning streak since taking two consecutive games against Rider Jan, 9-10 last year.

The 69 points were the highest output of the season for Siena (2-2 MAAC, 2-10 overall).

Rayshel Brown led the Saints with 16 points, which all came in the second half.

Margo Peterson scored 15 points on five 3-pointers. Selena Philoxy grabbed 11 rebounds as the Saints outrebounded the Red Foxes (1-3, 3-9) 39-24.

The Saints opened the third quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 37-29 ead. Siena led 43-40 after three quarters.

Siena took control in the fourth quarter. The Saints shot 10 for 14 (71.4%) from the field, including 3 for 5 (60%) from 3-point range. Siena outscored Marist 26-13 in the final quarter.

Deanna Winston led Siena with six assists.

Zaria Shazer led Marist with 13 points.

The Saints return to action on Saturday when host Manhattan at 2 p.m. at UHY Center.
