UAlbany women’s basketball wins sixth straight

LOWELL, Mass. — Two teams heading in opposite directions maintained their respective courses on Wednesday, as the UAlbany women’s basketball team defeated UMass Lowell 58-52 at Costello Athletic Center.

With the win, the Great Danes won their sixth straight and improved to 2-0 in the America East and 9-4 overall, while the River Hawks (0-1, 3-7) lost their fourth straight.

Kayla Cooper had 13 points and 14 rebounds for UAlbany, and Freja Werth scored 13.

Lilly Phillips scored 11 points, and Helene Haegerstrand scored 10 as the Great Danes weren’t productive from 3-point range (2-for-10) but were 24-for-48 (50%) from the field for the game while holding UMass Lowell to 36.4% from the field and forcing 17 turnovers.

UAlbany, which outscored the River Hawks 38-18 in the paint, used a 15-9 third quarter to extend a 30-27 halftime lead to 45-36.

Werth and Phillips combined to score 11 points in the third.

The Great Danes haven’t lost since Dec. 8, a 52-41 road defeat against Vanderbilt.
