In the Pocket: Bertrand is making her mark in Capital Region

After nearly four decades of outstanding achievement on the lanes, energetic Pam Klar Bertrand continues to make her mark on the sport of bowling. Well known throughout the Capital Region as one of the area’s top female competitors, the 54-year-old Cohoes native is also a multi-talented administrator and popular coach.

“I’ve been involved in bowling all of my life,” said the Cohoes High School and Russell Sage College graduate. “Actually, the thing I love the most about bowling is the camaraderie and the sportsmanship. I was never really that competitive until my brother [Jim Klar Jr.] showed me I could compete.”

The daughter of longtime Troy Bowling Association board member Jim Klar Sr., Bertrand took over as the association manager three years ago after serving on the Troy USBC board. She also has offered her knowledge and many talents as the Cohoes High School boys’ and girls’ bowling coach for the last six seasons.

But during her prime, Bertrand was known for her performances on the lanes rather than behind the scenes.

“I began to bowl when I was just 6 years old,” she recalled. “I learned the game from Ed Scott, Bob Eberle, Chris Stedden and Bob Kavanaugh, and then later I got some help from Billy Neumann.”

Bertrand’s resume includes nine perfect games and two 800 triples, including a high-three of 847. Her highest average was a 221. A special education teacher in the Cohoes City District, Bertrand earned numerous performance awards, including winning the Troy USBC Bowler of the Year Award five times. She was also named the Albany City League MVP in 2007 and was named to the Albany USBC All-Star team several times.

Bertrand won the inaugural Capital District Women’s 700 Tournament in 2014 at Alpha Lanes, finished second in a Huck Finn Northeast Bowling Proprietors of New York Capital Region Bowling Show women’s event and was a member of several Troy USBC City Tournament championship teams.

Bertrand is currently bowling in three leagues, averaging 205 in the Lanthier’s Grove league at Hometown Lanes Wednesday nights, 209 in the Cohoes Classic Thursday nights at Cohoes Bowl and 213 in the Sunday Social Mixed at Hometown Lanes. She’s used an older Hyper Cell bowling ball for years but is recently also finding success with a new Hammer Black Widow 2.0.

Bertrand was a junior coach when her son, Jacob, was learning the game, and then took over the Cohoes varsity bowling teams a few years ago. Both the boys’ and girls’ team had records over .500 as of this writing.

When her mother, Kathy, died three years ago, Bertrand took over as the Troy USBC secretary/manager, a job similar to Schenectady USBC manager Lloyd Denny’s. Despite the loss of many bowling centers in the Capital Region over the last decade or so, leaving both the Schenectady USBC and the Albany USBC with only three centers apiece, the Troy USBC still has nine member centers — Uncle Sam Lanes, Cohoes Bowl, Green Island Lanes, Hilltop Bowl, Hometown Lanes, Barbecue Recreation, Spare Time Latham, Spare Time Clifton Park and a private set of lanes at the Watervliet Elks. The Troy USBC lost two member centers fairly recently. Longtime proprietor Artie Hoffman closed Hi-Way Recreation in Wynantskill last year. A fire destroyed Alpha Lanes in Troy a couple of years ago.

Upcoming Troy USBC events include the Troy 700 Tournament Feb. 12 at Hometown Lanes, the Average Joe Tournament March 12, a Mixed Doubles event in March and the Troy USBC City Tournament in April.

“I started working in the association to help promote the sport I love,” Bertrand said. “My goal is to get more people involved. The numbers in our sport have dropped recently, and I’m just trying to keep people involved and get them to come out and bowl and keep our sport alive.”

Don’t be surprised to see the hard-working and devoted Bertrand join her father and brother in the Troy USBC Hall of Fame eventually, but there is one problem. As association manager, she’s the one ultimately responsible for taking care of the paperwork, and promoting herself is not in her DNA. It took more than a little prying to get Bertrand to discuss her dozens of bowling achievements.
