New Niskayuna school superintendent may be named in February

A new Niskayuna Central School District superintendent may be named next month.

Of the 18 applicants for the position, eight were interviewed, said Adrienne Leon, the director of communications and public relations for Capital Region BOCES, in an email Tuesday. Capital Region BOCES is aiding the district with its search for a superintendent.

The eight applicants were interviewed between Nov. 1 and Christmas, she said.

“As of now, the plan is to make an announcement in February,” Leon said in the email.

In July 2021, then-Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra Jr. announced he would be leaving to take a position in the New Hartford Central School District in Oneida County.

Juliette Pennyman has been overseeing the district as interim superintendent since October.

In August, the board decided to move forward with a confidential search for the next district leader. A confidential search limits interviews to mainly school board members. A more traditional search would have offered an opportunity for members of the public and other interested parties to interview the superintendent candidate and give feedback to the board.

The last update on the search provided to the public at a school board meeting was Nov. 30. Since then, the school board has convened executive sessions to discuss the search for a superintendent.

According to the search process timeline provided by BOCES, the new superintendent would start July 1.
