High schools: Shenendehowa boys run away with Section II Division I track title

The Shenendehowa boys’ track team won four individual track events, claimed two relays and two field events Saturday at the Section II Division I boys’ track championships on the Union College campus. The Plainsmen also claimed the top three spots in the weight throw finals led by Tate Lehman’s toss of 50-feet-9.25 followed by Evan Collette and Matthew Tomaszewski.

The Plainsmen outscored second-place Guilderland 182-85 followed by Shaker, Colonie and Albany.

COLUMBIA CLAIMS BOYS’ DII TRACK TITLE

The Columbia Blue Devils claimed the top spot in two individual track events along with two field events, but its depth proved to be too much,outpacing Niskayuna to win the Division II title, 127-69 followed by La Salle with 67 points, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake with 62 and Albany Academy with 53. 

SARATOGA SPRINGS GIRLS’ WIN DIVISION I TITLE

Saratoga Springs captured the girls’ Division I team title with 152.50 points, ahead of Guilderland and Shenendehowa. The Blue Streaks captured the 4×800 relay with the quartet of Emily Bush, Alycia Hart, Mackenzie Hart and Anya Belisle along with taking the top three spots in the 1,500-meter led by Bush, Sheridan Wheeler and Ella Kurto. Kurto led another group across the line in the 3,000 in 10 minutes 19.62 seconds followed by Sheridan Wheeler and McKinley Wheeler. The Blue Streak trio of Bush, Alycia Hart and Mackenzie Hart also swept the top spots in the 1,000.

In the field events, Guilderland took the top three spots in the high jump, led by Trinity Kenney’s leap of 4-feet-10 followed by Elizabeth Liu and Maggie McFerran.

BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE WINS GIRLS’ DII TRACK TITLE

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls track team captured the Division II title with a 157-point output. The Spartans captured the 4×200 and 4×400 relays as Mia Belanger and Alexa Belanger finished in the top three in the girls high jump, long jump and triple jump finals. Niskayuna’s Mary Kate Cestaro captured the 1,500 in 5:03.37 and was second in the 1,000 at 3:14.29.

The Section II championships continue today at Hudson Valley Community College hosting the Division III and Division IV events.

BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE HANDED TWO LOSSES AT DUAL MEET CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake wrestling team lost to Brentwood 33-29 and Fairport 35-33 Saturday at the NYSPHSAA Division I Dual Meet Championships in Syracuse.

Spartan wrestlers Ryan Buthfer (172), Colin Carlin (138), Liam Carlin (126), Tyler Rossini (145) and Joshua Warland (152/160) earned a pair of victories in the state event.

In Division II, Warrensburg-Bolton fell to Brentwood 21-16 in the semifinals. The North Country squad opened with a 37-31 win over Saranac before falling to Cold Spring Harbor, tied 33-33 after all matches concluded, losing on a tiebreaker, 7-6. 

STILLWATER’S LOCCI WINS MILLROSE GAMES LONG JUMP

Stillwater’s Gianna Locci captured the girls’ long jump with a leap of  almost 20-feet on her second attempt Saturday at The Armory in New York City. After fouling on her first attempt, she reached 19-feet 6-inches and was not matched by another competitor on the day. 

Shenendehowa runner Carter Cukerstein second in the boys’ 55-meter final in 6.31 seconds and second in the 60-meter final in 6.77.

NISKAYUNA DROPS ROME FREE ACADEMY IN NON-LEAGUE TILT

Owen Evans scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Niskayuna rallied from a 34-26 third quarter deficit to defeat Rome Free Academy 46-42 Saturday afternoon at Albany Academy. Jack Allen provided 11 points through the first three quarters before Evans took over.

Ceasar Thompson had another big night for Amsterdam, 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome four double-digit scorers from Albany Academy as the Cadets dropped the Rams 80-52 in non-league action. Keyshaun Tillery, Jr. and Shamiere Green each scored 19 points on the night with Robert Chandler adding 17 and 12 rebounds. Jarin Beauford tacked on 13 of his own in the win. After a close first quarter, Albany Academy opened up the scoring with a 28-9 second for a 45-23 halftime lead.

Robert Jordan scored a game-high 24 points to lead Fort Plain past Dolgeville 64-47 in non-league action. Levi Thomas added 14 and Stephen Gray tacked on 11 for the Hilltoppers.

HOLY NAMES DEFEATS TROY IN NON-LEAGUE MATCH-UP

Ryan Carroll led Holy Names with 18 points in a 44-37 victory over Troy on Saturday. Sophia Bologna added 15 points for Holy Names. Addie Barowsky and Solaris Nunez each had 13 points for Troy.
