The incident happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday on the Northway in Malta, over two connected crashes in both the northbound and southbound lanes, state police said.

The initial crash happened in the southbound lanes, state police said, citing their preliminary investigation, when an SUV driven by Dorronsoro rear-ended in the center lane an SUV driven by Fred Baxtrome, 59, of Fort Edward.

Two passengers in Baxtrome’s vehicle were later taken on to Saratoga Hospital to be evaluated. No injuries to Baxtrome are listed in a release.

After that initial impact, Dorronsoro lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median and came to rest in the center northbound lane, state police said.

Johnson, described by state police as a passing motorist, stopped to assist Dorronsoro.

Johnson was nearing the warehouse off Exit 16 when, according to police, he stopped to assist Dorronsoro somewhere near Exit 12.

Both Johnson and Dorronsoro, as they stood behind Dorronsoro’s vehicle, were then struck and killed by a northbound box truck, state police said.

Johnson was delivering a shipment of newspapers to its warehouse in Glenmont at the time of the crash, according to a Hamilton News employee. The company distributes a number of local and national papers to points farther north.

A manager for the company, who declined to provide a name, confirmed Johnson had been working at the time, adding that he had worked for the company on a part-time basis for about four years and was well liked by his peers.

“We’re all really heartbroken about it,” the manager said.

Dorronsoro was a longtime server at Forno Bistro in Saratoga Springs, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page. Jes, it said “was a light that shined in our company. She touched many of our lives with her smile and her laugh,” the post read. “We cannot begin to tell you all how much we will miss her.”

The driver of the box truck was identified as Jennifer Aidoo, 34, of New Britain, Conn. Aidoo was not injured.

The crash remained under investigation Monday.
