A W.M. Larned & Sons dump truck loaded with, what police believe was, gravel rolled onto its side after the driver lost control on Route 5 in front of the Kiwanis Park in Rotterdam Junction shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday.

Traffic on Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction was diverted for a couple hours Friday morning after a truck rolled over and the load it was carrying spilled into the roadway.

Rotterdam police said they responded around 7:45 a.m. to the rollover, which happened in the area of Kiwanis Park. The driver was not injured, according to a news release from the department.

The driver’s name has not been released.

Police said the driver was operating a Larned & Sons dump truck, heading east on Route 5 when another vehicle slowed down or stopped in front of him.

“When the driver applied the brakes he lost control and as a result the truck overturned,” said Lt. Jeffrey Collins. “It is my understanding that the truck was carrying gravel.”

The road was closed for two hours as Department of Transportation crews assisted with the clean up. AC towing also assisted with cleanup, as well as truck removal, Collins said.

While the spill was being cleaned up, motorist were advised to take alternate routes. The department announced at 9:55 a.m. that the road was reopened.

No tickets were issued at the scene, Collins said.
