UAlbany women’s lacrosse started its season Sunday with a dream first quarter, but a nightmare second quarter left the Great Danes chasing against Stanford.

The chase after Stanford scored 10 unanswered second-quarter goals nearly paid off in a spectacular comeback, but ultimately UAlbany ran out of time in a season-opening 15-14 loss to the Cardinal at John Fallon Field in Albany.

UAlbany dominated the opening quarter, scoring five of the game’s first six goals and leading 6-2 after the opening 15 minutes behind two goals from Hailey Carroll and a goal apiece from Kathryn Sancilio, Allie Maloney, Bryan Hogg and Katie Pascale.

Then came the second quarter, when things completely flipped.

Stanford’s Annabel Frist scored five goals in the quarter, as the Cardinal — who were coming off a 12-9 loss in their season opener Friday at Syracuse — reeled off a 10-0 run to lead 12-6 at the half.

“Stanford had a lot of possession time in that second quarter,” UAlbany coach Katie Rowan Thomson said. “I think we panicked a little in getting the ball down the field safely in our clear.  We had some unforced turnovers, but our girls really fought hard to get the ball back.”

UAlbany trailed 14-8 entering the fourth quarter and were down 15-10 when Stanford’s Galen Lew scored with 7:30 to play.

UAlbany’s Sarah Falk scored 13 seconds later, then the Great Danes made a mad dash with three goals in the final minute — one from Pascale, then two from Falk — to make it a one-goal game with 13 seconds left, but Stanford won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.

Carroll scored four goals to lead UAlbany, which also got three goals and three assists from Pascale and the late hat trick from Falk. Ashley Humphrey had an 11-point game for Stanford with four goals and seven assists, while Frist scored six goals.

UAlbany will return to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. road game against Colgate.
