ALBANY — UAlbany’s 2022 football season will open Sept. 3 against Baylor at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, the school announced Tuesday.
Baylor finished the 2021 season ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll after going 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12. The Bears capped off their season with a win over Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, a 21-7 victory that saw the Baylor defense record a program-record 10 sacks.
If Baylor keeps its ranking, it will makr the first time that UAlbany has ever faced a ranked NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision team.
“The team is excited to open the 2022 season at Baylor,” UAlbany head coach Greg Gattuso said in a release. “We obviously understand the challenges we face playing a top-10 FBS team, but it will be a great experience for our Great Danes and for our fans.”
With the exception of 2020, when the Great Danes had their season postponed to spring 2021 by the novel coronavirus pandemic, UAlbany has played an FBS team every year since 2015, with its lone win coming against Baylor in 2016. The Great Danes played at Syracuse in September 2021, losing 62-24.
