TROY — Making history has been fun for the Duanesburg girls’ basketball team and they don’t show any signs of slowing down.

After winning its first-ever Section II Class C title last weekend, the Eagles flew high once again, dismissing Section VII champion Northern Adirondack, 79-54, in a NYSPHSAA regional final at Hudson Valley Community College Sunday afternoon.

Duanesburg (23-2) took advantage of the Bobcats’ defensive zone that forced the Eagles to look to take the outside shot. The gambit worked — for Duanesburg.

The Eagles hit 13 3-pointers with senior Madison Meyer and Allison O’Hanlon each sinking four. Hannah Mulhern added three treys and Alex Moses hit a pair of three-pointers.

“Our coach was telling us that they’re big, [Northen Adirondack’s Isabella Gilmore] was phenomenal,” Meyer said. “It was pretty much drive and kick, that’s all we had to do. We knew that we could shoot any of those shots they left open back at the 3 [point line].”

Duanesburg doubled up Northern Adirondack, 16-8, and outdid the Bobcats in the second during a 23-8 run for a 39-17 halftime lead, then extended its lead in the third and saw the huge edge start to roll back in the fourth as Eagles coach Chris Herron emptied his bench.

Moses hit both of her 3-pointers in the third quarter, ending some of her own shooting woes on her way to a 15-point outing.

“It’s like I can hear the angels singing, it’s so exciting, that’s the only way I can describe it,” Moses said. “I’ve had a couple rough shooting days and today, in the second half, it was really good.”

Meyer led the Eagles with 26 points, with O’Hanlon adding 16 and Mulhern dropping in 17 in the historic win.

“People that follow us and watch us see that we’re capable of that on numerous occasions, that’s our game,” Duanesburg coach Chris Herron said. “A surprise? No. We want it every game, it doesn’t happen every game and that’s why we’ve been harping on our defense.”

Duanesburg will face Section IV champion Newark Valley at10:45 a.m. Saturday at HVCC in the NYSPHSAA Class C semifinal. Section V champion East Rochester will face Section IX champion Millbrook in the opposite semifinal at 9 a.m. The state title game will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at HVCC.
