GLENVILLE — Two Schenectady County brewers took home gold medals at the 2022 New York State Craft Beer Competition.
The award ceremony was one of the highlights of the NYS Brewers Association conference held Wednesday through Friday at the Albany Capital Center. Judging was completed Feb. 13 and 14 by a panel of 60 experts at an event in Rochester.
Great Flats Brewing was honored with a gold for its Revival Export Stout, entered in the non-imperial stout category. The brewery operates in downtown Schenectady and will celebrate its fifth anniversary later this month.

Wolf Hollow Brewing Company won gold for its Tiny Tartan, a Scottish wee heavy ale entered in the strong ales category. The brewery and taproom in western Glenville opened in 2013.
Wolf Hollow co-owner Pete Bednarek said Monday that the gold medal was much appreciated but just being able to attend the conference was a win, after the separation imposed by the pandemic.
Craft brewing is a communal industry, he said, and “it was a pretty big deal for us to all be back together again.”
A total of 185 breweries submitted 1,264 beers for judging in 29 categories. To win its gold medal, Wolf Hollow had to beat out 31 other strong ale entries.

Bednarek said co-owner Jordan White wrote the recipe for Tiny Tartan and head brewer Kyle Folk delivered on it.
The beer is strong (10% alcohol by volume) and rich, with a deep malt profile and low bitterness.
The name is a bit of an inside joke: The brewery falls within the Scotia-Glenville school district, where Bednarek is a principal, where the brewery’s graphic artist is an alumnus, and where the school teams are named the Tartans.
Also awarded medals in the 2022 competition were Wayward Lane Brewing of Schoharie, which won gold for Shadowtricks in the experimental category, and Schmaltz Brewing Company of Troy, which won silver for Exodus 2021 in the non-Belgian strong ales category.
