The preliminary investigation indicated Hamza’s vehicle had broken down in the center lane and an uninvolved tractor-trailer had stopped alongside Hamza with its hazard lights on, state police said.

Another driver, identified as Timothy Murphy, 72, of Glens Falls, then changed lanes into the middle lane in response to the tractor-trailer, but failed to see Hamza stopped in the center lane and then struck the rear of her vehicle, state police said.

Hamza was taken to Albany Medical Center, where she died of her injuries, state police said.

Murphy was also taken to Albany Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, troopers said.

The investigation remained ongoing.
