Yanchoris leads Siena to men’s lacrosse win over Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Siena senior goalie Christopher Yanchoris turned in a career performance Saturday in helping the men’s lacrosse team down Monmouth 10-1 in a MAAC game.

Yanchoris saved a season-high 21 shots, marking the second time this season he has saved at least 20 shots. It was also the first time since May 1, 2009 that Siena held a team to just one goal, doing so to Providence, 7-1, in the first round of the MAAC Tournament.

Luke Julien and Christian Watts led Siena (1-2 MAAC, 3-5 overall) with three points apiece. Julien had a goal and two assists, while Watts had a pair of goals and one assist. Nick Casner played a big role, scoring both of his goals in the first quarter, when Siena took a 4-0 lead.

Siena hosts Manhattan next Saturday.

UALBANY 13, UMASS LOWELL 12

LOWELL, Mass. — First, UAlbany needed to rally. Then it needed to hold off the River Hawks’ rally in earning the important America East win.

UMass Lowell led 5-2 with 5:15 left in the first quarter, but the Great Danes (2-1, 3-5) rallied and took a 9-8 lead on Amos Whitcomb’s third goal of the game with 2:43 left in the third.

UAlbany built up leads of 11-8 and 13-10, but UMass Lowell scored twice in the final four minutes to make things tense. UAlbany has never lost to UMass Lowell in eight tries.

Corey Yunker led UAlbany with five goals and one assist. Whitcomb also had an assist, and Camden Hay contributed two goals and four assists. Jack VanValkenburgh started his first game in goal and made 15 saves.

UAlbany hosts Syracuse on Thursday night.

UALBANY 12, VERMONT 10

BURLINGTON, Vt. — UAlbany outscored Vermont 4-0 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 12-10 win in America East women’s lacrosse action.

Kathryn Sancilio’s goal cut Vermont’s lead to 10-9 with 9:53 left, then the Great Danes tied it on Sarah Falk’s game-high fifth goal of the game with 7:05 left. They took the lead on a Falk-to-Sancilio connection with 3:36 left, and secured it with Katie Pascale’s unassisted goal with 1:51 left.

Falk also had one assist, while Pascale finished with two goals and three assists. Sancilio also had an assist with her pair of goals. Katherine Chiarella and Aislinn Sweeney split time in goal, combining for 11 saves.

UAlbany (2-0, 4-6) travels to New Hampshire on Wednesday.

MONMOUTH 17, SIENA 11

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Monmouth used a 6-0 second quarter to earn the MAAC victory.

Siena (2-1, 6-6) responded by outscoring the Hawks 6-1 in the third quarter, but still trailed 11-8. 

Kelsey Lane scored a season-high four goals, as did Mary Soures, to lead the Saints. Grace Dobrzynski had a season-high five assists.

Siena travels to Canisius on Wednesday.
