Sports Briefs: Siena softball’s Fitzmaurice, Potter honored by MAAC

Following a week featuring three doubleheader sweeps for Siena, senior Ava Fitzmaurice earned MAAC Player of the Week, and freshman Kyleigh Potter took home MAAC Rookie of the Week.  

Fitzmaurice batted .500 (10-for-20) over six games, going with five runs scored, seven RBIs, three doubles and a home run. She had at least one hit in all six games, with a .560 on-base percentage and slugging .800. Fitzmaurice also was 3-0 pitching, with one save, striking out 14 over 19 innings.

Potter batted .353 with two doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs over six games, including five against Sacred Heart on March 30.

Agate named E8 Player of the Week

Russell Sage College softball infielder Emily Agate was named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

She batted .875 (7-for-8) with seven RBIs and two runs scored in Saturday’s doubleheader vs. Houghton. The infielder doubled, homered and stole a base as the teams split two E8 games.

Samson Rookie of the Week

Russell Sage College senior middle hitter Andrew Samson was named the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

Samson averaged 1.82 points per-set across three matches. He registered 1.27 kills per-set on .257 hitting and seven total blocks in the 2-1 week. The middle hitter totaled eight kills on .400 hitting and three total blocks in Saturday’s victory at NVU-Johnson.

Two Cobleskill players earn awards

For the second straight week, SUNY Cobleskill junior right hander Wyatt Palmer has been named North Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday.

He recorded a 3-2 non-conference home victory on Saturday afternoon over Bryant & Stratton, going the full seven innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Also for Cobleskill, first year catcher-designated hitter Logan Hutter was named NAC Rookie of the Week, going 4-for-6 with a double, walk, stolen base, run scored and five RBIs in a doubleheader split with Bryant & Stratton.

Brown E8 Rookie of the Week

Russell Sage College infielder Christian Brown, a Troy High graduate, was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

The freshman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs in Saturday’s doubleheader at Utica. Brown doubled and homered as the Gators split two E8 games.

Bruce E8 Player of the Week

Gloversville High graduate Damian Bruce of Utica College was named Empire 8 Player of the Week after going 2-0 in first singles and 2-0 in first doubles over two matches last weekend.

Against St. John Fisher on Saturday, Bruce and LJ Nuzzo took their doubles flight 8-7 before Bruce earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in singles. In the team’s 9-0 win over Alfred on Sunday, Bruce and Nuzzo claimed first doubles 8-2 while he went on to win first singles 6-4, 6-1.

With Bruce’s help, Utica defeated Alfred for the second time ever and for the first time since 2009.

Harrigan Liberty Performer of the Week

RPI’s Joey Harrigan has been chosen Liberty League Performer of the Week for helping the Engineers to a third place finish at the 17-team, 89-player Hershey Cup at the Hershey Country Club on Sunday and Monday.

He shot a 3-over 143 over the two-day event, tying teammate Matt Buckley for runner-up honors, three strokes behind the winner.

Harrigans shot a tournament-best 2-under on the par-4 holes.
